Workflow for computational fluid dynamics modeling of fixed‐bed reactors packed with metal foam pellets: Hydrodynamics

open access: yesAIChE Journal, Volume 69, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Abstract In recent years, the catalyst pellets made of open‐cell metallic foams have been identified as a promising alternative in fixed‐bed reactors. A reliable modeling tool is necessary to investigate the suitability of different foam properties and the shapes of foam pellets.

Approaching a realistic force balance in geodynamo simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Earth sustains its magnetic field by a dynamo process driven by convection in the liquid outer core. Geodynamo simulations have been successful in reproducing many observed properties of the geomagnetic field. However, while theoretical considerations suggest that flow in the core is governed by a balance between Lorentz force, rotational force and ...

Omni‐Directional Assembly of 2D Single‐Crystalline Metal Nanosheets

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A versatile assembly method is developed to uniformly assemble 2D single‐crystal copper nanosheets (Cu NS) onto substrates with complex shapes via ultrasonication process. This technique leverages cavitation effects to deposit monolayer Cu NS films with minimal overlap.

Forcings and Feedbacks on Convection in the 2010 Pakistan Flood: Modeling Extreme Precipitation with Interactive Large-Scale Ascent [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Extratropical extreme precipitation events are usually associated with large-scale flow disturbances, strong ascent and large latent heat release. The causal relationships between these factors are often not obvious, however, and the roles of different physical processes in producing the extreme precipitation event can be difficult to disentangle. Here,

Connecting Droplet Adhesion with Sperm Kinematics: A New Paradigm in Sperm Quality Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates direct experimental evidence to establish a nonintuitive connection between the motion characteristics of self‐propelled sperm cells and their surface interaction. Simultaneous motion visualization and cantilever‐deflection‐based adhesion characterization reveal that sperm‐cell droplets with higher motility exhibit lower surface

P3HT‐Based Electroactive Films for In Vitro Neuronal Cell Interfacing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Reducing the mechanical mismatch between bioelectronic devices and tissue is crucial for enhancing the characteristics of biointerfaces that better mimic the biological tissues. This work investigates the physico‐chemical properties of tunable nanostructured surfaces obtained from a blend of P3HT and MWCNT electroactive polymer.

An Anticoagulant Coating Based on a Block Phosphocholine Copolymer for Potential Applications in Blood Contact Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Anticoagulant properties are critical for blood‐compatible materials, and anticoagulant coatings are a common key issue for blood‐contacting medical devices. In this study, a block copolymer poly(2‐methacrylenoxyethyl phosphocholine‐b‐glycidyl) (PMPC‐b‐GMA) is synthesized, using reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) and
