Preoperative Botulinum Toxin A and Its Impact on Pulmonary Function in Giant Abdominal Wall Hernias: A Prospective Spirometry-Based Analysis

open access: yesJournal of Abdominal Wall Surgery
BackgroundBotulinum toxin type A has become an increasingly used tool in the preoperative management of giant abdominal wall hernias. Its primary objective is to “downstage” the hernia by inducing temporary paralysis of the lateral abdominal wall muscles,

Hemoglobin's α‐Helix‐to‐β‐Sheet Transition Enables Targeted mRNA Delivery to the Lung

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Acidic heating converts hemoglobin into β‐sheet‐rich fibrils with positively charged surfaces. These hemoglobin fibrils electrostatically complex IL‐11 scFv mRNA, selectively bind circulating platelets, and hitchhike to the lung, where they are enriched in fibroblasts.

Patterns of dietary intake and relation to respiratory disease, forced expiratory volume in 1 s, and decline in 5-y forced expiratory volume [PDF]

open access: yesThe American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2010
The independent effect of individual foods on the risk of respiratory disease is difficult to establish because intakes of specific foods are generally strongly correlated. To date, few studies have examined the relation between dietary food patterns and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)) or respiratory symptoms. The objective was to investigate ...

Frequent Sweetened Beverage Consumption Is Associated With Accelerated Biological Aging: Evidence From a Population‐Based Study and Gut Microbiota Analysis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Frequent sweetened beverage consumption is associated with accelerated biological aging in a large Chinese population. Five gut microbial genera are consistently enriched in both frequent sweetened beverage consumers and individuals with accelerated aging and show significant mediating effects, suggesting a potential microbiota‐related pathway linking ...

AARS1‐Mediated RUNX3 K193 Lactylation Enhances the Activation and Cytotoxicity of CD8+T Cells in Smoking‐Related Emphysema

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Exposure to CS causes an elevation of AARS1 levels, which increases the levels of RUNX3 lactylation at the K193 site and increases protein levels of RUNX3 through inhibition of autolysosomal degradation. Elevated RUNX3 levels promote CD8+T cell activation and augment their cytotoxicity, which induces alveolar epithelial cell death and facilitates the ...

Spirometry: basic concepts

open access: yesRevista Alergia México, 2019
Spirometry is a pulmonary function test that allows screening, diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory diseases. This is a simple, non-invasive test that is easy to perform. By quantifying the respiratory volumes and flows, such as forced vital capacity (

Sources of variation in forced expiratory volume in one second and forced vital capacity [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Respiratory Journal, 2006
Published prediction equations for lung function differ considerably, but the components of population variation responsible for the differences are unknown.Data were analysed for 6,323 never-smoking adults who did not report wheeze or asthma, from 42 centres participating in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey.

Preferential trading in agriculture: New insights from a structural gravity analysis and machine learning

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Preferential trade agreements (PTAs) contain various non‐tariff provisions, yet identifying their trade effects remains challenging because these commitments are high‐dimensional and strongly correlated within agreements. We estimated a theory‐consistent structural gravity model with domestic flows for 26 agricultural subsectors over 1988–2017

Effect of Yoga Breathing Exercises on Ventilatory Function

open access: yesJournal of Gandaki Medical College, 2017
Introduction: Controlled breathing not only keeps your mind and body functioning at their best, it can also lower blood pressure, promote feelings of calm and relaxation and help you de-stress. Many experts encourage using the yoga breathing exercises as
