Forced reflectional symmetry breaking of an O(2)-symmetric homoclinic cycle

A system of ordinary differential equations has \(O(2)\) symmetry if any solution of the system is transformed into another solution by an element of the orthogonal group \(O(2)\). It is known that differential systems with \(O(2)\) symmetry can possess heteroclinic cycles between two equilibria which belong to the same group orbit.

We consider abstract forced symmetry breaking problems of the type F(x,λ) = y, x ≈ O(x0), λ ≈ λ0, y ≈ O. It is supposed that for all λ the maps F(·,λ) are equivariant with respect to representations of a given compact Lie group, that F(x0, λ0) = 0 and, hence, that F(x,λ0) = 0 for all elements x of the group orbit O(x0) of x0.

Forced Symmetry Breaking from O(3)

Here we consider the flow near a manifold of equilibria of a specific orbit type of an O(3)-equivariant ordinary differential equation if we break the symmetry of the underlying system. This continues joint work with Mark Roberts [5] on cases of breaking SO(3)-equivariance. Applications to PDE’s are given in [6].
