The Welsh ‘geosyncline’ of the Silurian was a fore-arc basin
Nature, 1980The Welsh ‘geosyncline’1, an example of the classic geosyncline, has often been viewed in terms of plate tectonics as a Japan Sea-type marginal sea2–15. It is generally agreed that in the Welsh area during Cambrian and Ordovician times, Anglesey, with its north-east and south-west extensions, was an island arc complex with a trench to the north-west ...

Basalts erupted along the Tongan fore arc during subduction initiation: Evidence from geochronology of dredged rocks from the Tonga fore arc and trench [PDF]
A wide variety of different rock types were dredged from the Tonga fore arc and trench between 8000 and 3000 m water depths by the 1996 Boomerang voyage.

Structural frame work of the fore-arc basin, NW Sumatra
Journal of the Geological Society, 1980The fore-arc basin of the Sunda Arc off Sumatra is a strongly subsiding trough contained between the rising subduction complex and the elevated continental core. Up to 4 km of Miocene–Recent strata on the eastern flank of the basin have transgressed over an unconformity cut across a Palaeogene continental margin that was uplifted and structurally ...

Structural evidence of the evolution of fore-arc basins off South America
Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, 1977The continental margin of southern Peru and northern Chile was surveyed during the 1973 and 1974 expeditions of the research vessel Kana Keoki. Seismic reflection profiles reveal three large basins at about 1000 m depth between Mollendo, Peru (17°00′ S) and Iquique, Chile (20°00′ S).

Nonmarine Sedimentation in an Active Fore Arc Basin
1981Abstract The modern fore arc basin of Guatemala receives non-marine sediments as a result of deposition of airfall ash, glowing avalanches (nuées ardentes), debris flows (lahars), and fluvial sediments. The lateral and vertical distribution of these deposits allows ready subdivision into four facies, including 1) the volcanic core ...

Petroleum systems of the Simeulue fore-arc basin, offshore Sumatra, Indonesia
AAPG Bulletin, 2011Abstract Forearc basins result from plate convergence. These basins are situated offshore between an outer-arc high and the mainland. Historically, these regions have not been considered important petroleum provinces partly because low heat flow may limit significant thermal hydrocarbon generation.

Large thrust earthquakes and tsunamis: Implications for the development of fore arc basins
Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1979Variations of the subduction regime around the Pacific are reflected in changes of both the lengths of rupture zones and the source areas for tsunamis associated with large shallow earthquakes. Crustal deformation occurring during the earthquake and related tsunamic activity play important roles in the development and maintenance of topographic ...

Seismic stratigraphy and subsidence evolution of the northwest Sumatra fore-arc basin
Marine Geology, 1994Abstract New seismic reflection data collected with the Indonesian RV Baruna Jaya III under a French-Indonesian cooperative program allowed to study the geodynamic evolution and the seismic stratigraphy off northern Sumatra within the Sumatra fore-arc domain.

Abstract Gondwana (Tauride/Kirsehir blocks) and Eurasia (Pontides) derived continental blocks delimit the Haymana basin, central Turkey, to the south and the north, respectively. The boundaries of these blocks define the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan and Intra-Tauride Suture zones which are straddled by a number of Late Cretaceous to Oligocene marine to ...

Neogene Fore-Arc Basin Development in Northern California: Eel River Basin: ABSTRACT
AAPG Bulletin, 1983Strata representing the youngest phase of fore-arc basin development in northern California are exposed in an unusual cross-sectional view across the basin axis. The exposure of a large part of the stratigraphic section of the Neogene Eel River (Humboldt) basin can be attributed to uplift along the northern edge of the Mendocino triple junction.
