Earthquake stress drop (Δσ) may increase with depth and stress in the brittle lithosphere. However, the range of uncertainty in Δσ and the lack of constraints on absolute stress make it difficult to establish whether they are correlated.

In this study, which was conducted to investigate present-day geological deformations occurring off the central Ryukyu Arc along the Ryukyu Trench (Okinawa-jima) in the vicinity of Japan, we obtained and examined dense, high-resolution, 2D grid (high ...

Abstract The mechanisms by which new subduction zones form remain highly debated. Here we use Permo‐Triassic strata to evaluate potential mechanisms for initiation of the Talkeetna‐Bonanza Arc of the northern North American Cordillera. New mapping and analysis of Permian and Upper Triassic strata on the Alaska Peninsula suggest a period of uplift ...

Subduction zone fluxes of halogens and noble gases in seafloor and forearc serpentinites [PDF]
Serpentinites form by hydration of ultramafic lithologies in a range of seafloor and shallow subduction zone settings. Serpentinites are recognised as major reservoirs of fluid mobile elements and HO in subducting oceanic lithosphere, and together with ...

Integrated detrital zircon U–Pb, Nd–Sr isotopes and thermochronology record western Indian‐margin provenance reorganisation. Late Cretaceous–Palaeocene sediment supply was Indian‐affinity; Asian‐affinity input appeared across the Palaeocene–Eocene transition (~56.5–54.7 Ma), suggesting India–Asia collision was underway, while mixed provenance persisted

ABSTRACT Reconstructing the pressure–temperature–time (P–T–t) evolution of (ultra)high‐pressure rocks is essential for constraining subduction and collisional dynamics. Subduction zones are often investigated using basic eclogites, whereas nonbasic high‐pressure rocks remain comparatively understudied, potentially hindering a comprehensive ...

Abstract Seismic and aseismic slip has been reported in the Nankai Trough. In this study we apply ambient noise differential adjoint tomography to obtain a high‐resolution S‐wave velocity (Vs) model in the Nankai Trough. The Vs in the very shallow imbricate thrust zone is higher than that on both the seaward and landward sides.

Numerical models of subduction and forearc deformation [PDF]
presence of a low-strength megathrust and regional compression. Successful finite element models produce an outer arc at the top of the trench slope, and forearc basin with geometry characteristic of natural analogues. These structural features occur by upward inelastic bending of the lithospheric wedge overlying the megathrust.

Stratigraphy and sedimentology of Pliocene limestones, Wairoa district, northern Hawke's Bay [PDF]
This project documents the sedimentary geology of a shallow-marine, limestone-bearing Pliocene succession (Mangaheia Group; up to 1.5 km thick) within the Wairoa Syncline, northern Hawke’s Bay.
