Characterizing the Forearc Basement and Subducting Structures of the Northern Ecuadorian Margin

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract We present 2D P‐wave velocity (Vp) models from the northern Ecuadorian subduction zone, north of the Carnegie Ridge. Data were collected during the HIPER2 3D wide‐angle seismic experiment, both onshore and offshore. Key seismic profiles were manually picked to determine P‐wave first‐arrival times, which were used for a traveltime tomographic ...

Melting of old refractory mantle during subduction initiation of the western Pacific plate

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
The source characteristics and melting mechanisms for forearc basalts formed during subduction initiation in the western Pacific plate remain unclear.

Inner forearc faults in northern Cascadia do not accommodate elastic strain driven by the megathrust seismic cycle

open access: yesSeismica
We employ numerical models to explore the connection between subduction zone coupling or megathrust rupture and upper plate faults in the northern Cascadia forearc.

Building the Andean Crust at ∼35°S: Arc Geochemistry Reveals Cretaceous Thinning and Rapid Neogene Thickening

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Quantification of the timing and mechanisms of crustal thickening in Cordilleran orogenic hinterlands remains challenging. We address this in the Andes using whole‐rock geochemistry and zircon petrochronology from a >70 Myr volcanic record in the Tinguiririca valley of Chile (∼35° ${}^{\circ}$S), which captures a pivotal transition from ...

Thermal and Structural Signatures Associated With Subducted Seamounts in Hyuga‐nada and Off Cape Muroto, Southwest Japan

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract We present heat flow estimates beneath the forearc slopes off Hyuga‐nada and Cape Muroto in the Nankai Trough, where the Philippine Sea plate subducts beneath the southwestern Japan. Using seismic reflection data, we identified Bottom Simulating Reflectors and derived heat flow ranging from 20 to >140 mW/m2.

A new look at the geodynamic development of the Ediacaran–early Cambrian forearc basalts of the Tannuola-Khamsara Island Arc (Central Asia, Russia): Conclusions from geological, geochemical, and Nd-isotope data

open access: yesOpen Geosciences
Oceanic igneous rocks throughout the Altai-Sayan Fold Belt (ASFB) in central-southern Siberia are often considered to be late Precambrian–early Paleozoic accreted elements of oceanic crust – often of uncertain paleogeographic or geodynamic origin.

Detailed plate boundary structure off northeast Japan coast

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2000
In 1997, a seismic experiment using an airgun array and ocean bottom seismographs (OBSs) was performed in the forearc region of the northeast Japan (NEJ) arc.

Interseismic Strain Accumulation and Partitioning in Hispaniola From GNSS and InSAR

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract We combine GNSS and InSAR observations to constrain the spatial distribution of strain across the northeastern Caribbean plate boundary, focusing on Hispaniola, to investigate strain partitioning and fault slip rates in an actively deforming tectonic setting with significant seismic hazard.

The early Pliocene Titiokura Formation: stratigraphy of a thick, mixed carbonate-siliciclastic shelf succession in Hawke's Bay Basin, New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
This paper presents a systematic stratigraphic description of the architecture of the early Pliocene Titiokura Formation (emended) in the Te Waka and Maungaharuru Ranges of western Hawke's Bay, and presents a facies, sequence stratigraphic, and ...

Preserved Through Hyperaridity, 150 Million Years of Exhumation and Strike‐Slip Deformation in the Atacama Coastal Cordillera

open access: yesTectonics, Volume 45, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract The Coastal Cordillera of northern Chile, in the forearc of the Andean subduction zone, provides an ideal site to evaluate exhumation above the oldest active subduction under extreme aridity. This range lies parallel to a sediment‐starved trench, has experienced hyperaridity since the Miocene, and is transected by the ∼1,000‐km‐long Atacama ...
