Immunoreactive keratin with foreign body reaction in anencephaly

Acta Neuropathologica, 1985
Keratinous material, in the form of epithelial squames often with foreign body reaction and dense gliosis, was demonstrated in all of ten cases of anencephaly by a sensitive and specific immunohistochemical stain. In some cases keratin was not recognized on routine histological stains.

Foreign-Body Reaction Against Intraocular Lenses

American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1984
We studied five intraocular lens implants removed for various reasons by light, transmission, and scanning electron microscopy. Four implants were Binkhorst four-loop lenses; the fifth was of an unidentified type. The durations of implantation ranged from three to 36 months, with an average of 14 months.

Cellular and Molecular Dynamics in the Foreign Body Reaction

Tissue Engineering, 2006
Intracorporally implanted materials, such as medical devices, will provoke the body to initiate an inflammatory reaction. This inflammatory reaction to implanted materials is known as the foreign body reaction (FBR) and is characterized by 3 distinct phases: onset, progression, and resolution.

Symptomatic foreign body reaction to haemostatic alginate

British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1994
Kaltostat, a haemostatic wound dressing made from non-woven sodium calcium alginate fibres is becoming more frequently and widely used by practitioners. We report a florid foreign body giant cell reaction elicited by Kaltostat which had been used to obtain haemostasis in an apicectomy cavity on an upper lateral incisor approximately 7 months earlier ...

Endotoxin contamination delays the foreign body reaction

Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part A, 2011
AbstractBiomaterials are at continuous risk of bacterial contamination during production and application. In vivo, bacterial contamination of biomaterials delays the foreign body reaction (FBR). Endotoxins such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS), major constituents of the bacterial cell wall, are potent stimulators of the immune system in vitro and in vivo ...

The pathology of the foreign body reaction against biomaterials

Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part A, 2016
AbstractThe healing process after implantation of biomaterials involves the interaction of many contributing factors. Besides theirin vivofunctionality, biomaterials also require characteristics that allow their integration into the designated tissue without eliciting an overshooting foreign body reaction (FBR). The targeted design of biomaterials with

Experimental Foreign Body Reactions to Toothpaste Abrasives

Journal of Periodontology, 1976
Some clinical oral foreign body reactions have been reviewed. The testing of the foreign body potential of substances used as abrasives in toothpastes has shown a number to be capable of this. The clinical implications are briefly discussed. The initial studies were conducted when the author was on the faculty of the School of Dentistry, University of ...

The Lens as a Barrier Against Foreign Body Reaction

Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina, 1981
SUMMARY Cases of eyes with a piece of wood and a piece of rusting steel in the lens are used to demonstrate the capacity of lens substance and lens capsule for isolation of irritating foreign bodies. This barrier function of the lens is of interest in the search for the best location of intraocular lens implants.
