Abstract We apply a hybrid model (kinetic ions, fluid electrons) to provide context for MErcury Surface Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) observations of Disappearing Dayside Magnetosphere (DDM) events at Mercury. Such events have been observed on four occasions and are caused by Coronal Mass Ejections completely removing the ...

Abstract From 1974 to 1975, the Mariner 10 spacecraft studied Mercury's environment during three flybys and detected hydrogen, helium, and possibly atomic oxygen in the exosphere using its ultraviolet spectrometer, but no molecular hydrogen. Based on the sensitivity of the occultation instrument, an upper limit for the H2 ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ surface ...

Shocklets and Short Large Amplitude Magnetic Structures (SLAMS) in the High Mach Foreshock of Venus
Shocklets and short large‐amplitude magnetic structures (SLAMS) are steepened magnetic fluctuations commonly found in Earth's upstream foreshock. Here we present Venus Express observations from the 26th of February 2009 establishing their existence in ...

Kinetic aspects of foreshock cavities [PDF]
We have investigated the kinetic signatures within, and at the edges of, a foreshock cavity. Such cavities are believed to be formed when an isolated collection of interplanetary magnetic field lines connect to quasi‐parallel regions of the Earth's bow shock, allowing energetic ions to flow upstream and excavate a local cavity.

Abstract The magnetic Prandtl number in the slow solar wind is estimated by using magnetic and velocity Reynolds numbers. The Prandtl number quantifies the ratio of kinetic to magnetic diffusion rates in a plasma, and indicates which process dominates the transport dynamics in a fluid.

Foreshocks and aftershocks occurred before and after the ML6.8 (Mw7.0) earthquake in eastern Taiwan on 18 September 2022. We explore the epicentral distribution and temporal variations for the mainshock, foreshocks, and aftershocks.

Ion Behavior at Shocklets: A Case Study of MMS Observations
The existence of shocklets, a kind of solitary structure, has been demonstrated in the Earth's foreshock regions for decades. Their formation and evolution are believed to be controlled by ions. However, the detailed behavior of ions at them has not been

Properties of Foreshocks and Aftershocks of the Non-Conservative SOC Olami-Feder-Christensen Model: Triggered or Critical Earthquakes? [PDF]
Following Hergarten and Neugebauer [2002] who discovered aftershock and foreshock sequences in the Olami-Feder-Christensen (OFC) discrete block-spring earthquake model, we investigate to what degree the simple toppling mechanism of this model is ...

Martian Atmospheric Loss Through Foreshock Transient Events
Abstract At Mars, the MAVEN spacecraft has made observations of Hot Flow Anomalies (HFAs) in the foreshock. Due to the bow shock's proximity to the planet, it is theorized that HFAs contribute to atmospheric escape at Mars through the excavation of ionospheric ions.
