Artificial Intelligence in Systemic Sclerosis: Clinical Applications, Challenges, and Future Directions

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare autoimmune disease defined by immune dysregulation, vasculopathy, and progressive fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. Despite advances in care, major complications such as interstitial lung disease (ILD) and myocardial involvement remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality.

Classification of Forest Management Approaches: A New Conceptual Framework and Its Applicability to European Forestry

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2012
The choice between different forest management practices is a crucial step in short, medium, and long-term decision making in forestry and when setting up measures to support a regional or national forest policy. Some conditions such as biogeographically

Mass‐ratio and complementarity effects simultaneously drive aboveground biomass in temperate Quercus forests through stand structure

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2021
Forests play a key role in regulating the global carbon cycle, a substantial portion of which is stored in aboveground biomass (AGB). It is well understood that biodiversity can increase the biomass through complementarity and mass‐ratio effects, and the

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting

Provenance Variation in Functional Traits of European Forest Trees: Meta‐Analysis Reveals Effects of Taxa and Age Despite Critical Research Gaps

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Climate change is driving profound transformations in European forests. Understanding the adaptive potential of tree species is a key challenge for conservation and adaptation measures.

Reappearance of old growth elements in lowland woodlands in northern Belgium : do the associated species follow? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The forest cover of the western European lowland plain has been very low for centuries. Remaining forests were intensively managed, and old-growth elements like veteran trees and coarse woody debris became virtually absent.

Development of Sustainable MgO–C Refractories Using MgO–C Recyclates and a Novel Eco‐Friendly Fructose–Tannin Binder Crosslinked With Citric Acid

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study develops sustainable MgO–C refractories using recycled materials and eco‐friendly fructose–tannin binders. The enhanced performance of citric acid as a cross‐linker and functional additives on mechanical and thermomechanical properties was examined. Characterization included strength tests, immersion trials, and microstructural and inclusion

Quantification of Forest Regeneration on Forest Inventory Sample Plots Using Point Clouds from Personal Laser Scanning

open access: yesRemote Sensing
The presence of sufficient natural regeneration in mature forests is regarded as a pivotal criterion for their future stability, ensuring seamless reforestation following final harvesting operations or forest calamities. Consequently, forest regeneration

Microstructure Evolution of a VMnFeCoNi High‐Entropy Alloy After Synthesis, Swaging, and Annealing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis and processing (rotary swaging and annealing) of the novel VMnFeCoNi alloy is investigated, alongside the estimation of the grain size effect on hardness. Analysis of a wide grain size range of recrystallized microstructures (12–210 µm) reveals a low annealing twin density.
