Benefit, cost and risk analysis on extending the forest roads network: A case study in Crasna Valley (Romania)

open access: yesAnnals of Forest Research, 2015
The paper presents how the Analytic Hierarchy Process can be used to select the most suitable combination of new forest roads to build onto a forested area provided that social or ecological aspects are not jeopardized. All important features worth being

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting

The Effect of Roads on the Movement of Large and Mid-sized Mammals

open access: yesEnvironmental and Climate Technologies, 2014
Infrastructure development is one of the major threats to biodiversity in the forest. Roads are barriers which restrict the movement of animals. It is therefore urgent to explore characteristics of mammal life associated with forest road crossings ...

Fuzzy simulation of forest road surface parameters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The problem of construction of forest roads with the use of local low-strength substandard materials and industrial waste is considered. To solve the problem, the primary task is to develop a method for estimating the parameters of road surfaces taking ...

Microstructure Evolution of a VMnFeCoNi High‐Entropy Alloy After Synthesis, Swaging, and Annealing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis and processing (rotary swaging and annealing) of the novel VMnFeCoNi alloy is investigated, alongside the estimation of the grain size effect on hardness. Analysis of a wide grain size range of recrystallized microstructures (12–210 µm) reveals a low annealing twin density.

A new tool to calculate roadless space in forest landscapes, applied in the Congo basin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
New global strategies for road building require innovative tools to analyze linear patterns and their spatial distribution and to evaluate their environmental impacts. Roads not only present physical barriers to wildlife but also provide access for human

Combinatorial Synthesis of Next Generation Water‐Soluble Quaternized N‐Halamine Oligomers with Long‐Lasting Antiviral Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A combinatorial library of dual‐functional antiviral oligomers incorporating N‐halamine and quaternary ammonium functionalities is developed for long‐lasting antiviral activity. The lead materials exhibit rapid and durable antiviral activity against SARS‐CoV‐2 variants and influenza H1N1, with 4 to 5 log reduction in viral copies at 5 mg mL−1 ...

Migration and forests in the Peruvian Amazon: a review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
This paper reviews the literature on the links between migration and forests in the Peruvian Amazon. It highlights not only the complexity of the migrant–forest interface in Peru but also the relative lack of research on these dynamics.
