The role of clay minerals in the preservation of Precambrian organic‐walled microfossils

Abstract Precambrian organic‐walled microfossils (OWMs) are primarily preserved in mudstones and shales that are low in total organic carbon (TOC). Recent work suggests that high TOC may hinder OWM preservation, perhaps because it interferes with chemical interactions involving certain clay minerals that inhibit the decay of microorganisms.

A Patterned silicon wafer is used to bake and pattern polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamp. After the patterned side of PDMS stamp is wetted with self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiol solution, the gold coated substrate is microcontact printed with the PDMS stamp, leading to a hydrophilic–hydrophobic contrast pattern surface.

Deformations of nearly G2 structures

Abstract We describe the second order obstruction to deformation for nearly G2 structures on compact manifolds. Building on work of Alexandrov and Semmelmann, this allows proving rigidity under deformation for the proper nearly G2 structure on the Aloff–Wallach space N(1,1).

Yet in the case of the Habsburg port cities of Fiume/Rijeka and Trieste, contended by several different opponents, Italian and Croatian nationalisms had to face centuries‐long traditions of municipal autonomy.
