ThyD Is a Thylakoid Membrane Protein Influencing Cell Division and Acclimation to High Light in the Multicellular Cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. Strain PCC 7120

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 123, Issue 1, Page 31-47, January 2025.
Anabaena performs oxygenic photosynthesis in vegetative cells and N2 fixation in heterocysts. The protein ThyD is localized in thylakoid membranes: at the cell periphery in vegetative cells (v) and the cell poles in heterocyst (h). ThyD influences cell division and is required for acclimation to conditions of high light intensity.

Metals in Cyanobacteria: Analysis of the Copper, Nickel, Cobalt and Arsenic Homeostasis Mechanisms

open access: yesLife, 2014
Traces of metal are required for fundamental biochemical processes, such as photosynthesis and respiration. Cyanobacteria metal homeostasis acquires an important role because the photosynthetic machinery imposes a high demand for metals, making them a ...

Stable isotope analysis indicates partial mycoheterotrophy in arbuscular mycorrhizal woody seedlings in tropical forests

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 12, Page 2720-2733, December 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Chlorophyllous plants exhibiting partial mycoheterotrophy obtain carbon through mycorrhizal interactions in addition to photosynthesis. In arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) plants, the Paris‐morphotype (i.e.

Seasonal acclimation of photosynthetic thermal tolerances in six woody tropical species along a thermal gradient

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 11, Page 2493-2505, November 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Extreme heat events are becoming increasingly common, and the short‐term acclimation of photosynthesis will have a large impact on plant performance. Trees in lowland tropical forests, which are hypothesized to have limited abilities to tolerate rising temperatures, may

Drought effects in Mediterranean forests are not alleviated by diversity‐driven water source partitioning

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 9, Page 2107-2122, September 2024.
Tree species diversity promotes below‐ground water source partitioning in mixed oak and pine stands, potentially reducing competition for water in more diverse ecosystems. Yet, these results show that it is insufficient to buffer the adverse impacts of severe droughts on above‐ground tree carbon and water use, leading to higher water stress, especially

Amino Acid Transporters and Release of Hydrophobic Amino Acids in the Heterocyst-Forming Cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. Strain PCC 7120

open access: yesLife, 2015
Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120 is a filamentous cyanobacterium that can use inorganic compounds such as nitrate or ammonium as nitrogen sources. In the absence of combined nitrogen, it can fix N2 in differentiated cells called heterocysts.
