Impact of Foveated Rendering on Procedural Task Training
Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2019Foveated rendering (FR) is a technique for virtual reality (VR) that adapts the image quality to the user’s eye fixation. The content within the user’s eye fixation appears in high quality, the peripheral area in lower quality. The technique exploits the fact that the eye, the retina, in particular, has its highest density of light-sensing cells in the

Audio-Visual Aware Foveated Rendering
IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer GraphicsWith the increasing complexity of geometry and rendering effects in virtual reality (VR) scenes, existing foveated rendering methods for VR head-mounted displays (HMDs) struggle to meet users' demands for VR scene rendering with high frame rates ($\geq 60fps$≥60fps for rendering binocular foveated images in VR scenes containing over 50 m triangles ...

3D-Kernel Foveated Rendering for Light Fields
IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, 2021Light fields capture both the spatial and angular rays, thus enabling free-viewpoint rendering and custom selection of the focal plane. Scientists can interactively explore pre-recorded microscopic light fields of organs, microbes, and neurons using virtual reality headsets.

Voronoi-Based Foveated Volume Rendering
2019Foveal vision is located in the center of the field of view with a rich impression of detail and color, whereas peripheral vision occurs on the side with more fuzzy and colorless perception. This visual acuity fall-off can be used to achieve higher frame rates by adapting rendering quality to the human visual system.

Perceptual model optimized efficient foveated rendering
Proceedings of the 24th ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology, 2018Higher resolution, wider FOV and increasing frame rate of HMD are demanding more VR computing resources. Foveated rendering is a key solution to these challenges. This paper introduces a perceptual model optimized foveated rendering. Tessellation levels and culling areas are adaptively adjusted based on visual sensitivity.

Fast Rendering of Foveated Volume in the Wavelet Domain
IEEE Visualization 2004, 2005A design issue in remote visualization is on the mapping of the viewer’s intention to the relevant data to be sent. One possible approach is to let the viewer interactively indicate the region of interests (ROI), and objects in the ROI will have higher priority during transmission.

Neural Foveated Super-Resolution for Real-time VR Rendering
Computer Animation and Virtual Worlds, 2023As virtual reality display technologies advance, resolutions and refresh rates continue to approach human perceptual limits, presenting a challenge for real-time rendering algorithms. Neural super-resolution is promising in reducing the computation cost and boosting the visual experience by scaling up low-resolution renderings.

Phase-Aligned Foveated Rendering for Virtual Reality Headsets
2018 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces (VR), 2018We propose a novel method of foveated rendering for virtual reality, targeting head-mounted displays with large fields of view or high pixel densities. Our foveation method removes motion-induced flicker in the periphery by aligning the rendered pixel grid to the virtual scene content during rasterization and upsampling.
