Diet composition of red fox during rearing in a moor: a case study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The diet of red fox (Vulpes vulpes) cubs living in a moor in Hungary was studied by scat analysis (n = 77) during the rearing period. The main food source of foxes consisted of small mammals (preferred Microtus voles) which was supplemented with brown ...

Can an ethical revival of prudence within prudential regulation tackle corporate psychopathy? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The view that corporate psychopathy played a significant role in causing the global financial crisis, although insightful, paints a reductionist picture of what we present as the broader issue.

The Emerging Parkinson's Disease Oxylipin‐Ome

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Parkinson Disease (PD) is increasingly considered a proteinopathy and lipidopathy. This proteinopathy+lipidopathy paradigm has been further refined to a fatty acid (FA)‐opathy, centering dysregulated FA metabolism as fundamental in PD lipid dysfunction.

The effect of top predator removal on the distribution of a mesocarnivore and nest survival of an endangered shorebird

open access: yesAvian Conservation and Ecology, 2021
For trophic systems regulated by top-down processes, top carnivores may determine species composition of lower trophic levels. Removal of top predators could therefore cause a shift in community composition.

The Trichinella Super‐Pangenome Reveals the Evolution of Encapsulation and Predicted Host–Parasite Protein Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The muscle capsule of Trichinella is a critical structure that impedes immune attacks and drug penetration, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying its formation remain poorly understood. Using a high‐quality super‐pangenome comprising 12 Trichinella species, we compared extensive genomic variations between encapsulating and non‐encapsulating ...

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus (H5N1) Infection in Red Foxes Fed Infected Bird Carcasses

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2008
Eating infected wild birds may put wild carnivores at high risk for infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus (H5N1). To determine whether red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are susceptible to infection with HPAI virus (H5N1), we infected 3 ...

Garbage in the diet of carnivores in an agricultural area [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Human food waste is considered to be richer in carbohydrates, lipids and proteins than most natural food supplies; however, it is very well digested in scats. So, as an indication of this kind of food in the diet, we have used each indigestible,

Microbial Odorant Detection Guides Drosophila Parasitoids Seeking Hosts in Fermenting Fruits

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Yeast microbes in fermenting fruits attract both host flies and their parasitoid wasps. Female Leptopilina boulardi detect yeast‐emitted ethyl esters via two olfactory receptors, LbouOR167 and LbouOR136. A conserved residue, Leu159, is critical for binding these compounds, enabling female wasps to locate host‐rich habitats.

Host-specific vascular endothelial cell responses to Angiostrongylus vasorum: a comparative in vitro study in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and domestic dogs

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
IntroductionCanine angiostrongylosis, caused by Angiostrongylus vasorum, affects dogs and red foxes, with dogs developing cardiopulmonary and coagulation disorders, while foxes remain mostly subclinical.MethodsThis study examined aortic endothelial cell ...
