Lipopolysaccharide uptake is augmented in lipopolysaccharide‐tolerant mouse macrophage‐like cells via increased CD14 expression

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In normal (nontolerant) cells, CD14 is crucial for both LPS uptake and LPS signaling. In LPS‐tolerant cells, in which LPS‐induced TNF‐α and IFN‐β production is suppressed, there is a dramatic increase in surface CD14 expression. The overexpressed CD14 in LPS‐tolerant cells is responsible for the enhanced LPS uptake without inducing pro‐inflammatory ...

Fractional Ablative CO2 Laser Followed by Topical Application of Sodium Stibogluconate for Treatment of Active Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: A Randomized Controlled Trial

open access: yesActa Dermato-Venereologica, 2018
Conventional treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis often leaves permanent scars with frequent psychosocial sequelae. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy, safety, associated pain and final cosmetic outcome of fractional carbon dioxide (CO2 ...

A comparison of methods to evaluate energy expenditure of incubating wandering albatrosses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Measurements of incubation energetics can vary depending on the method used to measure metabolism of an incubating bird. Therefore, we evaluated the energy expenditure of six male and four female wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans Linnaeus) using ...

Epilepsy‐Associated Variants of a Single SCN1A Codon Exhibit Divergent Functional Properties

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Pathogenic variants in SCN1A, which encodes the voltage‐gated sodium channel NaV1.1, are associated with multiple epilepsy syndromes exhibiting a range of clinical severity. SCN1A variants are reported in different syndromes, including Dravet syndrome, which is associated with loss‐of‐function, whereas neonatal/infantile‐onset ...

The Efficacy of fractional CO2 laser in management of surgical wound scars

open access: yesمجله كليه طب الكندي, 2014
Background: Atrophic postoperative and traumatic scarring are common cosmetic problems for patients. Combining CO2 laser ablation with a fractional photothermolysis system in a treatment known as ablative fractional resurfacing fulfilling the new ...

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Innovative Processing of Compacted Waste Aluminum Alloy Powders via Controlled Remelting and Solidification

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates an efficient recycling route for out‐of‐spec AlSi10Mg atomized powders through compaction and arc remelting followed by suction casting. By correlating compaction load, cooling rate, and resulting microstructure, we show that intermediate pressures (50–80 kN) and rapid cooling refine dendrites, reduce porosity, and enhance ...
