Rock Fracture Criteria

2010
When stresses in the Earth’s crust exceed the crustal strength, the rock fractures and fails (Brace 1964; Hoek 1968; Obert 1972). A fracture criterion describes the conditions for which failure occurs in a material. In principle, one distinguishes between phenomenological and mechanistic failure theories.

Criteria for brittle fracture in compression

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1990
Abstract Fracture nucleation and propagation in the compressive stress field of the geological and the mining environment is considered with the purpose of formulating an empirical, but general fracture criterion that is in agreement with experimental evidence. Present fracture criteria are inadequate for compressive loading.

Fracture criteria for materials with defects

Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, 1987
Abstract Classical theories of the strength of materials start from concepts of the existence and uniqueness of fracture surfaces in the space of indpendent loading parameters: on approaching a certain point of this surface from within along any arbitrary loading path, the instant of fracture is fixed by the very same combination of loading ...

On material fracture criteria

Technical Physics, 2017
Based on the nonlinear mechanics of material fracture, a model of the fracture of materials with actual (discrete) structures has been constructed. The model is supported by proofs that crack resistance K 1c and fracture toughness G 1c

The mixed mode brittle fracture criteria in siliding mode fracture

Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, 1985
It is well-known that the present mixed mode brittle fracture criteria are all the opening mode fracture criterion. We consider that mixed mode brittle fracture of sliding mode fracture exists too. Hence we propose three criteria of mixed mode brittle fracture of sliding mode fracture;: the radial shearing stress criterion, the maximum shearing stress ...

Fracture Criteria on Peeling

1980
The mechanical conditions for the initiation and the propagation of fracture are considered in the case of trousers type of a specimen consisting of two flexible canvas bonded with rubbery adhesive. To reduce the difficulties in mathematical analysis a mechanical model for peeling is adopted.

Fracture Criteria for Brittle Materials

Journal of Testing and Evaluation, 1976
Abstract The behavior of brittle materials under biaxial and triaxial loading is predictable on the basis of stress envelopes derived from the properties of idealized materials. In the case of nonmetallic brittle materials, the idealized patterns must be somewhat modified to allow for the low tensile strength of these materials.

Criteria of nonlinear fracture mechanics

Strength of Materials, 1988
Difficulties are experienced in using some of the examined fracture criteria in the elastoplastic region. The apparent fracture toughness varies in a wide range. The effect of the thickness of the specimen on cracking resistance is relatively small.

Criteria for Elastic Fracture

2012
Criteria for the growth of a pre-existing crack as generally based on reaching critical values of the stress intensity factors or energy release rate. Starting with the simplest case, that of tensile fracture in an elastic material, criteria for fracture under a range of conditions are explored.

Local criteria for ductile fracture

International Journal of Fracture Mechanics, 1968
Strain distributions in specimens suitable for studying the initiation of fracture are reviewed, and distributions are developed for the steady-state propagation of cracks in plane strain lension of fully plastic materials. The functional forms of local fracture criteria are discussed for different metallurgical mechanisms. It is concluded that: a)
