Is Young's Modulus a Critical Coating Property Determining Fouling‐Release Performance of Marine Coatings?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The release of foulers from protective marine coatings is determined by several interrelated material properties, including the strength of Young's modulus, the flexibility of chain segments, the surface free energy, and the magnitude of hydrodynamic stress.

Encapsulating Laser‐Induced Graphene to Preserve its Electrical Properties and Enhance its Mechanical Robustness

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
It is demonstrated that laser‐induced graphene (LIG) can be encapsulated while preserving its electrical conductivity and enhancing its mechanical properties. Unlike previous encapsulation attempts, the optimal conditions described here result in sheet resistance of ≈2 Ω sq−1, resistance increase of only 5% upon encapsulation, and vastly improved ...

Development of SiC Nanocomposites Using Direct Ink Writing Process

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Herein, feedstock inks containing polycarbosilane and various concentrations of SiC nanoparticles (SiCnp) are investigated for fabricating ceramic matrix composites using a DIW 3D printing process. Characterization results from physical measurement, microstructure analysis, and thermal and flexural testing suggested that high‐performance CMC samples ...

Simulation of fracture healing

open access: yes, 2013
Superficially, bone seems to be a static part of the human body. In reality, bone tissue constantly adapts itself to an ever changing mechanical environment. This work explores mathematical models approximating the complex biological processes that provide bone with its unique regenerative capabilities. We apply numerical simulations implementing these

Improved Strength and Corrosion Resistance of Ti–50Zr Alloy Through Heat Treatment

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work systematically analyzes the effects of heat treatment on mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of Ti‐50Zr alloy produced via vacuum arc melting. Microstructure transforms from coarse lamellar α phase in as‐cast condition to fine and uniformly distributes acicular α′ phase in heat‐treatment state.

Advances in Fracture Healing Research

open access: yesBioengineering
Despite a constant refinement of surgical techniques and bone fixation methods, up to 15% of fractures result in impaired healing or even develop a non-union [...]
