It is well established that local mechanical conditions and interfragmentary movement are important factors for successful bone healing and may vary dramatically with patient fracture-load and activity. Up until now however it was technically impossible to use these key influence parameters in the aftercare treatment process of human lower extremity ...

Patients with diabetic ankle fractures consistently are at greater risk of sustaining a complication during treatment than nondiabetics.other medical comorbidities, especially Charcot neuroarthropathy and peripheral vascular disease, play distinct roles in increasing these complication rates. Acceleration of the fracture healing process would have far-reaching benefits for both civilians and military personnel. Decreasing the time to return to complete function would reduce medical costs, enhance quality of life by decreasing pain and increasing mobility, accelerate the return of professional athletes to their sport, and decrease the time ...

This paper reviews the sequence of histomorphologic changes that occur in and around a fracture site, and discusses recent concepts about the roles of the cells and bone matrical moieties in promoting specific cell transformations during the phases of callus tissue formation and consolidation of the bony cortex.

Every physician who treats fractures wants a therapeutic means of accelerating fracture healing. The prospect of such therapy deserves having special attention called to it. Benfer and Struck (see p 838) provide evidence that locally applied soluble pig collagen benefits fracture healing.

In a fracture healing experiment using rabbit tibiae, apparatus was used to produce a constant measured compression at the site of surgically produced fractures. The apparatus did not hold the fracture rigidly immobilized, but permitted a degree of motion.

Inhibition of fracture healing
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. British volume, 2007This paper reviews the current literature concerning the main clinical factors which can impair the healing of fractures and makes recommendations on avoiding or minimising these in order to optimise the outcome for patients. The clinical implications are described.
