Linear elastic fracture mechanics predicts the propagation distance of frictional slip [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
When a frictional interface is subject to a localized shear load, it is often (experimentally) observed that local slip events initiate at the stress concentration and propagate over parts of the interface by arresting naturally before reaching the edge.

Optimizing Post Friction Stir Welding Heat Treatment in Dissimilar Friction Stir Welded 6061/AlSi10MgMn Joints for Electrical Vehicle Battery Housing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Microstructural evolution and hardness optimization along the cross‐section of friction stir welded AA6061/AlSi10MgMn joints, for electric vehicle battery housings, were investigated. Postweld aging between 170°C and 220°C enhances hardness uniformity within the nugget zone.

Interpreting experimental fracture toughness results of quasi-brittle natural materials through multi-parameter approaches

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2015
Natural stones like marbles are often employed as façade panels to externally cover buildings. These natural materials tend to exhibit a quasi-brittle nonlinear fracture behaviour which, conversely to concrete counterpart, has much less been studied in ...

Interaction between matrix crack and circular capsule under uniaxial tension in encapsulation-based self-healing concrete

open access: yesUnderground Space, 2018
This paper investigates the fracture process of a capsule when subjected to uniaxial tension in encapsulation-based self-healing concrete. A circular capsule embedded in the mortar matrix is considered along with different ratios of core-shell thickness.

Hot ductility of TiNb IF steel slab after hot torsion testing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The aim of the work was to evaluate the hot ductility loss in TiNb stabilized IF steel directly from the continuously-cast slab using hot torsion testing (plastometry) in the temperature range 600-1250 degrees C according to the basic programme, and also

Unidirectional Tape‐Based Composites from Hemp and Pineapple Leaf Fiber: Mechanical Performance in Conventional and Bio‐Based Matrices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The study investigates novel semi‐finished products made of unidirectionally arranged hemp or pineapple leaf fiber‐reinforced composites produced from different matrices. The materials are analyzed in terms of their mechanical and interfacial properties and void content.

Development law of fractured zone of overburden strata in backfill mining based on plate and shell theory

open access: yesMeikuang Anquan, 2021
In order to analyze the development law of overlying strata fracture zone in filling mining, the fracture mechanics process of key strata in filling mining was analyzed by using the theory of plate and shell.

Can Ti‐Based MXenes Serve as Solid Lubricants for Brake Applications? A Tribological Study

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores the first implementation of Ti‐based MXenes materials in brake pad friction composite material. The resulting composite material exhibits a 48% reduction in the wear rate; alongside significant improvements are observed for thermal and mechanical properties.

Investigation on the characterization and modelling of Fracture Process Zone behavior in Concrete Beams subjected to Three-Point Loading Tests

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity
The fracture behavior of quasi-brittle materials such as concrete is characterized by the presence of a fracture process zone (FPZ) that precedes the main crack.
