Propagation of a Vertical Hydraulic Fracture

Society of Petroleum Engineers Journal, 1972
Abstract This paper treats the propagation of hydraulic fractures of limited vertical extent and elliptic cross-section with the effect of fluid loss included. Numerical and asymptotic approximate solutions in dimensionless form give the fracture length and width at any value of time or any set of physical ...

Effect of a natural fracture on hydraulic fracture propagation

2004
The effect of an existing fracture in a naturally fractured formation on the extension of a hydraulically induced natural fracture has been studied. Fracture interaction criterion was presented and a numerical model was developed to predict the dynamic fracture dimensions based on PKN³¹ fracture mechanics.

Fracture propagation in organic glasses

International Journal of Fracture Mechanics, 1968
A quantitative assessment of the density of hyperbolic markings in the fracture surfaces of polymethyl methacrylate has been made showing that the density is proportional to the fracture toughness. In general the fracture toughness at any instance is a random function, but there is a definite tendency for it to increase with velocity of fracture ...

Dynamical modelling of fracture propagation

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 1994
Abstract The numerical modelling of fracture propagation is proposed. Material is modelled as a triangular lattice whose bonds have short-range interaction. The interaction models the elastic properties of materials. Using a gaussian-type interaction, it is possible to describe fracture propagation without introducing a breakdown threshold.

Gel Propagation Through Fractures

Proceedings of SPE/DOE Improved Oil Recovery Symposium, 2000
Abstract When gels are used for conformance control in reservoirs, a need exists to determine how much gel should be injected in a given application and where that gel is distributed (i.e., placed) in a naturally fractured reservoir. These parameters depend critically on the properties of gels in fractures.

Propagation of a fracture in an infinite medium

Pure and Applied Geophysics, 1965
The displacement produced in an infinite homogeneous, isotropic elastic medium due to a steadily progressing crack has been obtained in a closed form by using Laplace transforms andCagniard's method. Numerical values of the displacement have been obtained and presented graphically.

Numerical Modelling of Fracture Propagation

1983
Why should one study fracture propagation? Is not prediction of fracture initiation the object of fracture mechanics? In his papers on rupture under tensile and compressive loading, Griffith1,2 proposed conditions for fracture initiation which he presumed to be coincident with structural instability. The vast majority of the fracture mechanics research
