Laboratory Experiments in Fracture Propagation

Society of Petroleum Engineers Journal, 1984
Abstract This paper describes fracturing experiments in dry blocks of various rock materials. The results have application to evaluation of hydraulic fracturing theories. The block dimensions were 3 in.×4 in.×12 in. [7.6 cm × 10.2 cm × 30.5 cm] with metal plates epoxied to the 3-in. × 12-in. [7.6-cm×30.5-cm] faces.

Dynamical modelling of fracture propagation

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 1994
Abstract The numerical modelling of fracture propagation is proposed. Material is modelled as a triangular lattice whose bonds have short-range interaction. The interaction models the elastic properties of materials. Using a gaussian-type interaction, it is possible to describe fracture propagation without introducing a breakdown threshold.

Modeling of Fracture Propagation During verbalanced erforating

Proceedings of SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 1994
Abstract We present here a model that describes the propagation of a fracture created during extreme overbalanced perforating or overbalanced surge of existing perforations. Model predictions are compared with field results. This paper shows that the wellhead pressure (WHP) decay is well predicted by our model and that this type of ...

Elastic interface waves propagating in a fracture

Physical Review Letters, 1992
We have made the first direct observation of a new class of elastic interface waves that propagate along the discontinuity of a fracture in a solid. Two propagating eigenmodes were detected in a synthetic fracture in aluminum. The waves are dispersive and polarization dependent, verifying theoretical predictions.

Fracture propagation in organic glasses

International Journal of Fracture Mechanics, 1968
A quantitative assessment of the density of hyperbolic markings in the fracture surfaces of polymethyl methacrylate has been made showing that the density is proportional to the fracture toughness. In general the fracture toughness at any instance is a random function, but there is a definite tendency for it to increase with velocity of fracture ...

Fracture Initiation and Propagation From Deviated Wellbores

Proceedings of SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 1993
ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of an analytical study of hydraulic fracture initiation and propagation from deviated wellbores. The interaction and link-up of the starter fractures initiated from perforations and the turning of the linked fracture are investigated.

A Novel Treatment for Propagated Crown Fractures

Journal of Endodontics, 2015
A major complication after endodontic treatment is persistent pain on biting or chewing. Although unsuccessful endodontic treatment can account for such pain, pain to chewing and biting can also be a result of an unsupported or propagated crown fracture.

Numerical Modelling of Fracture Propagation

1983
Why should one study fracture propagation? Is not prediction of fracture initiation the object of fracture mechanics? In his papers on rupture under tensile and compressive loading, Griffith1,2 proposed conditions for fracture initiation which he presumed to be coincident with structural instability. The vast majority of the fracture mechanics research
