Hydraulic-Fracture Propagation in a Naturally Fractured Reservoir

SPE Production & Operations, 2010
Summary We present the results of numerical modeling that quantify the physical mechanisms of mechanical activation of a natural fault because of contact with a pressurized hydraulic fracture (HF). We focus on three stages of interactions: HF approaching, contact, and subsequent infiltration of the fault.

Fold Catastrophe Model of Fracture Propagation of Hydraulic Fracturing

2010 International Conference on E-Business and E-Government, 2010
According to energy conservation from the destruction of rock catastrophe, a new calculation method of the length of fracture propagation in hydraulic fracturing is proposed, and assuming the crack extends to approximate ellipse, the width calculation model of fracture extension is established.

Elastic interface waves propagating in a fracture

Physical Review Letters, 1992
We have made the first direct observation of a new class of elastic interface waves that propagate along the discontinuity of a fracture in a solid. Two propagating eigenmodes were detected in a synthetic fracture in aluminum. The waves are dispersive and polarization dependent, verifying theoretical predictions.

Linear stability analysis for propagating fracture

Physical Review E, 1996
To study the stability of mode I (opening-mode) fracture, we consider a two-dimensional system in which a crack moves along the center line of a very wide, infinitely long strip. We compute the first-order response of the crack to a spatially periodic, perturbing shear stress. We assume isotropic linear elasticity in the strip and a cohesive-zone model

Dynamic fracture propagation in hydraulic re-fracturing

Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2010
Re-fracturing is important for stimulating low-permeability reservoirs, for the effective production duration after the initial fracturing is short and needs to be stimulated again. However, the fracture configuration caused by re-fracturing affects the re-stimulated production greatly.

Effect of Natural Fractures on Hydraulic Fracture Propagation

SPE European Formation Damage Conference, 2005
Abstract Various fracture interaction criteria were reviewed and a systematic study is presented to analyze the effect of natural fractures on hydraulic fracture propagation. From the literature review, the approach of Warpinski and Teufel was adopted to evaluat the fracture propagation that would occur after a hydraulic fracture ...

Review on fracture and crack propagation in weldments – A fracture mechanics perspective

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2014
Welding is one of the most common methods in industrial practice for joining components. Its main advantages are high speed in manufacturing combined with low costs and, usually, a high degree of flexibility, integrity and reliability. Nevertheless, welding is a highly complex metallurgical process and, therefore, weldments are susceptible to material ...
