The plane strain fracture of polysulfone

Abstract It is shown using photoelastic techniques that the concepts of fracture mechanics apply to the plain strain fracture of isotropic polysulfone, a ductile glassy polymer. This forms a yielded zone, consisting of crazes, ahead of the crack, that can be described by the Dugdale model.

AbstractThe dependency of fracture on the rate of strain of a range of polyethylene samples was measured in three point flexural tests at 23°C. The range of strain rates from 10−1 to 10−7 reciprocal seconds was examined. The J integrals at the initiation of the cracks were determined.

Plane strain cumulative fracture

By analysing appropriate models, the condition for plane strain crack propagation at a constant crack tip stress intensity factor (cumulative fracture) is shown to be dependent on the amount of plastic deformation per crack extension increment, and the yield stress. The results are relevant to the problem of environmentally assisted crack growth.

Strain-rate dependent fracture initiation

The theory of linear elastic dynamic fracture mechanics for Heaviside loading of an isolated crack is employed to formulate the response to constant strain-rate loading of a single crack. Numerical integration of the Heaviside solution is shown to lead to fracture initiation stresses that are dependent upon the imposed strain rate.
