Anomalous scaling of mortar fracture surfaces

Physical Review E, 2005
Scaling properties of mortar crack surfaces are studied from a mode I fracture test. Fracture surfaces initiated from a straight notch are shown to display an anomalous dynamic scaling of the crack roughness emphasizing the different crack developments between the directions parallel and perpendicular to the crack propagation direction.

Fracture surface statistics of filled elastomers

Physical Review E, 2009
Roughness profiles of fracture surfaces formed as a result of the fast crack propagation through a filled rubber were analyzed by means of the height-height correlation functions. The fracture surface was found to be anisotropic in a certain domain of values of length scales; i.e., different values of roughness exponents are observed across and along ...

Surfaces of cryosections: is cryosectioning ‘cutting’ or ‘fracturing’?

Journal of Microscopy, 1991
SUMMARYIn order to determine if cryosectioning involves ‘fracturing’ or ‘cutting’ we examined the surfaces obtained in cryosectioning by a metal‐replicating procedure commonly used in freeze‐fracture microscopy. Platinum‐carbon replicas were made of the surfaces of both the sections and the complementary surfaces of the sample stubs from which the ...

Examination of Fracture Surfaces

Abstract Fracture surfaces can provide an important and indispensable record of many factors in simple or complex failures. Visual examination of fracture surfaces can reveal the type and direction of loading, with fracture-surface features often providing definitive evidence of torsion, tension, bending, and compressive loads.

Photography of Fractured Parts and Fracture Surfaces

Abstract This article provides a discussion on the following photographic equipment: point-and-shoot cameras, digital single-reflex cameras, stand-mounted digital zoom cameras, and digital microscope cameras. It presents two principal types of optical microscopes that are appropriate for visual examination of fractured parts: the ...
