Development of Fragility Curve Considering Aging of Oil Storage Tanks and Its Application to Risk Assessment of Industrial Complexes

open access: yes, 2010
The industrial oil complexes in Japan have been taking various countermeasures for prevention and reduction of disaster based on the regulations. Nevertheless, we cannot deny the possibility of breakout of severe disaster such as leakage of oil, fire ...

Cracking the Code: Which Ocular Symptoms Predict Dry Eye Signs? Insights From a Large International Sicca Registry

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective The study aimed to identify symptom‐based predictors of dry eye disease (DED) signs in the Sjögren's International Collaborative Clinical Alliance (SICCA) cohort. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis examining 16 ocular symptoms (most graded 0–4) and artificial tear (AT) use (graded 0–3) as predictors of DED signs (abnormal ocular ...

A new methodology development for flood fragility curve derivation considering structural deterioration for bridges

open access: yes, 2016
Floods have been known to be one of the main causes of bridge collapse. Contrary to earthquakes, flood events tend to occur repeatedly and more frequently in rainfall areas; flood-induced damage and collapse account for a significant portion of disasters

Experimental Evaluation of 100Cr6 Steel Microindented Surfaces Under Lubricated Nonconformal Point Contacts

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The tribological behavior of 100Cr6 steel spheres textured via Vickers microindentation is evaluated under lubricated sliding by varying both dimple size and density. Fine and dense textures significantly reduce friction across all lubrication regimes, while large dimples increase it.

Seismic Fragility Estimation Based on Machine Learning and Particle Swarm Optimization

open access: yesBuildings
In seismic performance assessment, the development of building fragility curves is critical for performance-based engineering. Traditional methods for time history analysis, reliant on detailed ground motion (GM) inputs, often suffer from inefficiency ...

Zein‐Based Adhesives: Sustainable Extraction and Application in Bioadhesive Technologies

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Zein is extracted from corn gluten meal using a simple and scalable process with high yield (~90%). The resulting protein is applied in bioadhesives modified with Ca2+ and Fe3+ ions, exhibiting substrate‐dependent adhesion. The findings demonstrate competitive bonding performance and highlight the role of ionic interactions in tuning adhesion ...
