Laboratory Studies of Suspended Frazil Ice Particles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The physical and kinematic properties of frazil ice particles have proven difficult to measure with any accuracy in the past. As a result, little is known about the size distribution, thickness, aspect ratio, and rise velocity of these particles, making it impossible to develop accurate mathematical models of the formation, development, and transport ...

Modelling frazil and anchor ice on submerged objects

open access: yesCold Regions Science and Technology, 2018
Frazil and anchor ice cause blockage of water intakes and icing of other type of submerged objects. In this paper, the physical mechanisms that control these phenomena are discussed and analyzed.

Frazil Ice Formation,

1984
Abstract : Frazil ice forms in flowing or turbulent water that has become supercooled by heat transfer to overlying air. This report investigates the influences of turbulence and water temperature on frazil ice formation. The rate and the quantity of frazil ice formed in a specified volume of supercooled water increase with both increasing turbulence ...

Frazil Ice Formation: A Review

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1978
The problems associated with frazil ice formation are examined, the current state-of-the-art is reviewed, and recommendations for future research are made. No priorities are assigned to these recommendations. Future research should focus on obtaining heat transfer data, temperature measurements, flow measurements, physical measurements on frazil ice ...

Development of an underwater frazil-ice detector

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 1990
Abstract A new underwater frazil-ice detector developed at USACRREL is described. The detector can operate remotely and independently. It can automatically start de-icing procedures and alert operators to the presence of frazil. The detector operates by measuring the flow rate through a small intake screen upon which frazil ice can accumulate.

Anchor or Frazil ice at the Buffalo Intake

Journal AWWA, 1935
The Buffalo waterworks is provided with two intakes, both of which are exposed. The older intake built in 1873 and enlarged in 1897, is located in Niagara River opposite the Massachusetts Avenue Pumping Station, and is connected thereto by two unlined tunnels through rock. These are gated off at the pump well in the station.

The Interaction of Newly Forming Frazil Ice and Sediments

2023
In river freeze-up periods, small disc-shaped frazil ice forms during supercooling in turbulent river flow. Under continuous cooling, these particles collide and freeze to form frazil flocs and entrain suspended sediments. Sediment-laden flocs might rise to the surface and freeze into frazil pans, eventually becoming ice cover; or sinking to the bottom

An Investigation of Frazil and Anchor Ice and Their Role in Ice Cover Development

1989
Abstract : The primary objective of this research has been to develop a basic scientific understanding of frazil and anchor ice including their formation (nucleation or sources), growth, characteristics, and evolution and to assess the roles that they play in the development of the ice cover during freeze-up particularly in edge ice formation, floe ...
