Deformable surfaces: a free-form shape representation
SPIE Proceedings, 1991This paper presents a technique for constructing shape representation from images using free- form deformable surfaces. We model an object as a closed surface that is deformed subject to attractive fields generated by input data points and features. Features affect the global shape of the surface while data points control its local shape.

Preventing self-intersection under free-form deformation
IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, 2001Free-Form Deformation (FFD) is a versatile and efficient modeling technique which transforms an object by warping the surrounding space. The conventional user-interface is a lattice of movable control points but this tends to be cumbersome and counterintuitive.

Ray-Casting Free-Form Deformed Volume Objects
The Journal of Visualization and Computer Animation, 2003AbstractA collection of techniques is developed in this paper for ray casting free‐form deformed‐volume objects with high quality and efficiency. The known inverse ray deformation approach is combined with free‐form deformation to bend the rays to the opposite direction of the deformation, producing an image of the deformed volume without generating a ...

Image Manifold Interpolation using Free-Form Deformations
2006 International Conference on Image Processing, 2006An important class of image data sets depict an object undergoing deformation. When there are only a few underlying causes of the deformation, these images have a natural low-dimensional structure which can be parameterized using manifold learning. This paper presents a method to solve for the deformation field as a function of the manifold coordinates

Dynamic free-form deformations for animation synthesis
IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, 1997Free form deformations (FFDs) are a popular tool for modeling and keyframe animation. The paper extends the use of FFDs to a dynamic setting. Our goal is to enable normally inanimate graphics objects, such as teapots and tables, to become animated, and learn to move about in a charming, cartoon like manner.

Fully free-form deformation features for aesthetic shape design
Journal of Engineering Design, 2005Geometric models, such as B-Rep or CSG, are often used as a shared reference representation of the product along the whole design process. However, they do not provide capabilities for conveying complex information related to the involved product development tasks.

Fully Free-Form Deformation Features (δ-F4) Incorporating Discontinuities
Volume 1: 30th Design Automation Conference, 2004To limit low-level manipulations of free-form surfaces, the concept of Fully Free Form Deformation Features (δ-F4) have been introduced. They correspond to shapes obtained by deformation of a surface area according to specified geometric constraints. In our work, we mainly focused on those features aimed at enforcing the visual effect of the so-called ...

Fast free-form deformable registration via calculus of variations
Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2004In this paper, we present a fully automatic, fast and accurate deformable registration technique. This technique deals with free-form deformation. It minimizes an energy functional that combines both similarity and smoothness measures. By using calculus of variations, the minimization problem was represented as a set of nonlinear elliptic partial ...
