Statistical model for free-space optical coherent communications using adaptive optics

open access: yes, 2022
Paper 999108, 12 S.In this paper we present a new model for describing the turbulence-induced fading that uses the representation of the phase in the aperture plane as a collection of random ""cells"".

Screening and epitope characterization of Nidogen‐2‐specific nanobodies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Camel immunization and phage display were employed to generate high‐affinity VHH nanobodies against Nidogen‐2. After library construction, biopanning, ELISA screening, sequencing, and recombinant expression, selected nanobodies were purified and characterized, leading to the preliminary exploration of a nanobody‐based sandwich ELISA for specific ...

Conception and development of an adaptive optics testbed for free-space optical communication

open access: yes, 2009
Optical free space communications are an efficient approach to transmit high data-rates with small antennas and low power consumption over large distances. Possible scenarios are links between satellites, up- and down-links from and to ground stations as

Free-space optical spiking neural network

open access: yesPLOS ONE
Neuromorphic engineering has emerged as a promising avenue for developing brain-inspired computational systems. However, conventional electronic AI-based processors often encounter challenges related to processing speed and thermal dissipation. As an alternative, optical implementations of such processors have been proposed, capitalizing on the ...

Prospects and Challenges of Free Space Optical Communications

open access: yes, 2018
Free space optical (FSO) transmission is a technology which uses a narrow laser beam to transmit the signal from the source to the destination through the free space. Although it has various advantages, a laser beam propagating through the atmosphere is subjected to different kind of disturbances causing the attenuation of the signal and, in some ...

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

High speed train communications systems using free space optics

open access: yes, 2010
In this work, we propose a broad-band free space optical (FSO) wireless communications system for high-speed trains. The system consists of optical transceivers positioned outside the train and along the railway track.

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Frequency dissemination with free-space optical links

open access: yes, 2010
Optical clock technology is very certain to be integrated in the next high precision time standards. The demand for higher accuracy in time synchronization makes the use of free-space optical links necessary for frequency dissemination, especially if ...
