Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Toward Efficient Data-Free Unlearning

open access: yesProceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence
Machine unlearning without access to real data distribution is challenging. The existing method based on data-free distillation achieved unlearning by filtering out synthetic samples containing forgetting information but struggled to distill the retaining-related knowledge efficiently.

An integrated debt management model for municipalities in the Free State Province [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
ThesisMunicipal debt management in the public sector has emerged as a critical topic in the post-apartheid era in South Africa. After 20 years of democracy, the culture of non-payment for municipal services in South Africa continues to pose a serious ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Chempedia Data Downloads: Free as in Free

open access: yes, 2009
Few non-technical topics lead to more heated debate in the field of scientific databases than terms of data reuse. Chempedia, the free chemical substance registry, aims to be different in every significant way from the services that came before it. One of the ways this can be seen is in the terms of use for its data downloads. There are really two bits

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Landfills or dump sites? Status of landfill sites in the Free State Province, South Africa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Published ArticlesIncreased waste generation and poor waste disposal strategies are a global problem. In South Africa most provinces, and the larger municipalities and metros, seems to have the waste disposal and the landfills reasonably organized.
