Experimental investigation of reinforced concrete members subjected to reversed cyclic axial loading

open access: yesStructural Concrete, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper presents an experimental campaign of five reinforced concrete members subjected to cyclic axial loading alternating between tension and compression. Fiber optical sensors and digital image correlation, in combination with automated crack detection and measurement, were used to investigate, among other aspects, the development of ...

800 kV Fast Circuit Breaker: Mechanical Coupling Modelling, Buffer Design and Development

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The 800 kV fast circuit breaker (CB) used in ultra‐high voltage (UHV) converter transformer can reduce the total breaking time to 25 ms. It significantly improves the action speed and breaking capacity of the CB, with promising broad application prospects.

Extracellular fluid viscosity influences the mechanics and migration of MDA‐MB‐231 cells in a macromolecule‐dependent manner

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Macromolecule‐dependent increases in extracellular fluid viscosity alter cell phenotype. These distinct macromolecules create different extracellular environments that modulate cell morphology and mechanoprotein expression, migration and invasion capacity, and cellular mechanical properties.

Simulation study on the operating characteristics of FPEG based on variable load control

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering
To stabilize the operation of free-piston engine generators (FPEGs), a variable load control strategy is proposed to regulate piston motion. By dynamically adjusting the equivalent load to control the system’s total resistance, the strategy alters the ...

Isometric training at longer muscle–tendon complex lengths: A potential countermeasure to impaired neuro‐muscle–tendon function during space travel

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Manned space exploration to distant destinations, including Mars, continues to be an aspiration of humankind. Space travel does, however, present many challenges to the body, amongst which adaptation to microgravity is perhaps the largest. For instance, both short and long manned spaceflight missions have shown substantial deleterious effects ...

A fast numerical method based on static reduction for the solution of the contact problem of the piston ring

open access: yes矿业科学学报, 2017
This paper provides a fast method based on static reduction for the solution of the displacements of the piston ring's contact nodes. The nodal displacements and the corresponding nodal forces of the contact nodes are connected by the contact stiffness ...

Impaired Windkessel function and proximal aortic stiffness: Linking vascular ageing to cognitive decline

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Central arterial stiffening, particularly of the proximal aorta, is increasingly recognised as a pivotal contributor to cardiovascular disease, dementia, and mild cognitive impairment. Loss of Windkessel function amplifies pulsatile pressure, reduces diastolic perfusion and accelerates microvascular damage in the brain.
