Finite element simulation of three-dimensional free-surface flow problems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
An adaptive finite element algorithm is described for the stable solution of three-dimensional free-surface-flow problems based primarily on the use of node movement.

Computing stationary free-surface shapes in microfluidics

open access: yes, 2005
A finite-element algorithm for computing free-surface flows driven by arbitrary body forces is presented. The algorithm is primarily designed for the microfluidic parameter range where (i) the Reynolds number is small and (ii) force-driven pressure and ...

Microscopic Observation of Plastic Deformation of Polycrystalline Aluminum by Laser Scanning Microscope [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Free surface of polycrystalline metal becomes roughened after plastic deformation. The surface roughening is closely related to the inhomogeneity of polycrystalline metals, that is, to the inhomogeneous plastic deformation of respective grains.

T-spline based unifying registration procedure for free-form surface workpieces in intelligent CMM [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
With the development of the modern manufacturing industry, the free-form surface is widely used in various fields, and the automatic detection of a free-form surface is an important function of future intelligent three-coordinate measuring machines (CMMs)

Linear Free Surface of Steady and Unsteady Flow Theoretical Study

open access: yesTikrit Journal of Pure Science
This study investigates the relationship between the crucial cone point in limiting steady and unsteady simulation flows inside a simple two-dimensional, vertical sand column subjected to water withdrawal.

Optimal Use of Titanium Dioxide Colourant to Enable Water Surfaces to Be Measured by Kinect Sensors

open access: yesSensors, 2020
Recent studies have sought to use Microsoft Kinect sensors to measure water surface shape in steady flows or transient flow processes. They have typically employed a white colourant, usually titanium dioxide (TiO2), in order to make the surface opaque ...

Free and nearly free surfaces in $P^3$

open access: yes, 2015
We define the nearly free surfaces in $P^3$ and show that the Hilbert polynomial of the Milnor algebra of a free or nearly free surface in $P^3$ can be expressed in terms of the exponents. An analog of Saito's criterion of freeness in the case of nearly free divisors is proven and examples of irreducible free and nearly free surfaces are given.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis and Validation with Field Test of 1 MW Hydropower Turbine System

open access: yesEnergies
This study analyzed and validated a 1 MW hydropower turbine system using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in conjunction with field test data. The fluid domain of the hydropower system includes the runner blade, vane, duct, and both inflow and outflow ...

Surface Fluctuations of an Aging Colloidal Suspension: Evidence for Intermittent Quakes

open access: yes, 2009
We present measurements of the thermal fluctuations of the free surface of an aging colloidal suspension, Laponite. The technique consists in measuring the fluctuations of the position of a laser beam that reflects from the free surface.
