Karma Theory, Determinism, Fatalism and Freedom of Will [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The so-called theory of karma is one of the distinguishing aspects of Hinduism and other non-Hindu south-Asian traditions. At the same time that the theory can be seen as closely connected with the freedom of will and action that we humans supposedly ...

Multiphysics‐Driven Assembly of Biomimetic Vesicles

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Artificial extracellular vesicles, derived from cell membranes, are manufactured using a multiphysics‐integrated microfluidic platform that combines nanoknife membrane rupture, herringbone chaotic mixing, and acoustothermal modulation. This standardizable workflow enables the predictable control of vesicle formation and therapeutic loading, while ...

Moral responsibility after neuroscience

open access: yesFilosofia Unisinos, 2013
Moral responsibility is centered on the idea that, given some conditions, people deserve blame or credit, punishment or reward. At least according to traditional readings, moral responsibility presupposes free will, understood as the ability to choose ...

Field‐Free, Deterministic Giant Spin‐Orbit Torque Switching of 1.3 T Perpendicular Magnetization With Symmetry‐Lifted Topological Surface States

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We show a giant, bias‐field free, deterministic, spin‐orbit‐torque switching of perpendicular hard magnets with HC over 1.3 T. By combining the three‐fold 3m symmetry from topological insulator surface states with the rectangular mm2 symmetry from the 2 x 1 intercalation in Cr3Te4, the interface symmetry is significantly reduced into a unidirectional m

CdTe Quantum Dots Encapsulated on Perovskite Grains Enable Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Present work demonstrates an efficient laser‐assisted localized interfacial engineering strategy that achieves epitaxial‐grade atomic coherence in spatially defined p‐n microscopic heterointerfaces, via precisely embedding p‐type CdTe QDs into an n‐type perovskite matrix, which concurrently establishes dual optimization of microscale carrier management

Emergent Freestanding Complex Oxide Membranes for Multifunctional Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review surveys freestanding oxide membranes and covers fabrication and three pathways for studies and devices: strain‐free and strained membranes, and van der Waals‐integrated heterostructures. We show how coupled oxide responses map onto these routes and cross‐couple to expand behaviors.

Free Will and Divine Sovereignty in Eusebius of Emesa: A Fourth-Century Antiochene Homily Against Determinism

open access: yesReligions
This study examines Eusebius of Emesa’s De arbitrio, voluntate Pauli et Domini passione (Homily I), a fourth-century homily rediscovered in the twentieth century, to elucidate its contribution to the theological debate on free will within early ...

Causal determinism and moral responsibility [PDF]

open access: yesZbornik Radova Filozofskog Fakulteta u Prištini
In the debate between incompatibilists and compatibilists regarding the relationship between causal determinism, moral responsibility, and free will, causal determinism is identified as a potential basis for an excusing argument against moral ...

The Kochen-Specker and Conway-Kochen Theorems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This essay provides an analysis of two important theorems that arise in the context of quantum mechanics: the Kochen-Specker theorem, which challenges the existence of hidden variable theories; and the Conway-Kochen (free will) theorem, which can be seen

Field‐Effect Transistors from Artificial Charged Domain Walls in Stacked Van der Waals Ferroelectric α‐In2Se3

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study utilizes the van der Waals stacking of ferroelectric α$\alpha$‐In2Se3 to fabricate in‐plane artificial charged domain walls. These charged domain walls are electrically accessible, gate‐tunable, and show 2–9 orders of magnitude higher conductance than charged domain walls from thin film ferroelectrics, allowing their integration in field ...
