Application of gender‐ablated semen during timed artificial insemination following oestrous synchronization in dairy and beef cows

open access: yesReproduction in Domestic Animals, Volume 58, Issue 4, Page 529-536, April 2023., 2023
Abstract The objectives of this study were to compare oestrous synchronization expression and conception rate following timed artificial insemination (TAI) with frozen–thawed X‐sexed or unsexed semen in dairy and beef cows. For this study, 227 cows (dairy, n = 130 and beef, n = 97) were assigned to a 9‐day Ovsynch + controlled intravaginal drug release

Twin reduction in the late embryonic period prevents the condition of freemartin in dairy cattle

open access: yesReproduction in Domestic Animals, Volume 57, Issue 12, Page 1649-1651, December 2022., 2022
Abstract The condition of freemartinism occurs in the bovine heterosexual twin foetuses and refers to the resulting infertile female. Vascular anastomoses of the foetal membranes are the major reason of this anomaly. This study examines whether single born heifers following induced twin reduction at 28–34 days of pregnancy could develop normal ...

Antemortem diagnosis of a doubly committed juxta‐arterial ventricular septal defect resulting in bacterial endocarditis and septic arthritis in a Holstein heifer

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 10, Issue 2, June 2022., 2022
Abstract A 20‐month‐old Holstein heifer presented for evaluation of progressive hindlimb lameness that was localised to the left coxo‐femoral joint, with development of a fever, tachycardia and bruxism. Radiographs and ultrasound of the coxo‐femoral joint were relatively unremarkable. An echocardiogram showed a static left‐to‐right shunting ventricular

A high incidence of leukocyte chimerism (60,XX/60,XY) in single born heifers culled due to underdevelopment of internal reproductive tracts

open access: yesCzech Journal of Animal Science, 2014
Freemartinism, a primary disorder of sex development (DSD) in cattle, is associated with leukocyte chimerism (60,XX/60,XY). The diagnosis of DSD is easy if it is known that a heifer with abnormally developed reproductive tracts originates from a ...

Multiple congenital malformation in a Simental female calf: a case report

open access: yesVeterinární Medicína, 2010
Congenital anomalies in offspring of natural breedings are often a result of environmental factors, genetic factors, or both. A 21-day-old male Simental female calf was submitted to our clinic with abnormal severe green mucoid nasal discharge from both ...

Haematopoietic chimerism expressivity in bovine heterosexual twins

open access: yesIndian Journal of Animal Sciences, 2016
The aim of the experiment was to study the haematopoietic chimerism in bovine heterosexual twins conceived through artificial insemination and post-embryo transfer.

Freemartinism in river buffalo: clinical and cytogenetic observations

open access: yes, 2004
: During the last five years forty phenotypic female river buffalos with reproductive problems and two phenotypic male co-twins of females, raised in the provinces of Caserta and Salerno (southern Italy) underwent cytogenetic investigation.

Chromosome fragility in Freemartin cattle

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2007
The aim of the present study was to verify chromosome fragility in freemartin cattle using chromosome aberration (CA) and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) tests. A total of eighteen co-twins were investigated. Fourteen animals were identified as cytogenetically chimeric (2n=60, XX/XY) while 4 were classified as normal.

Randomised clinical trial evaluating the effect of different timing and number of fixed timed artificial inseminations, following a seven‐day progesterone‐based protocol, on pregnancy outcomes in UK dairy heifers

open access: yesVeterinary Record, Volume 181, Issue 22, Page 595-599, December 2017., 2017
The objective of this study was to determine the effect on pregnancy outcome of either inseminating heifers twice (at 48 and 72 hours after withdrawal of a controlled internal drug release insert (CIDR) containing progesterone) or once (56 hours after CIDR withdrawal) following a seven‐day CIDR synchronisation protocol.

Combined Bone Marrow and Kidney Transplantation for the Induction of Specific Tolerance

open access: yesAdvances in Hematology, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
The induction of specific tolerance, in order to avoid the detrimental effects of lifelong systemic immunosuppressive therapy after organ transplantation, has been considered the “Holy Grail” of transplantation. Experimentally, tolerance has been achieved through clonal deletion, through costimulatory blockade, through the induction or infusion of ...
