Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Tuning of human modulation filters is carrier-frequency dependent [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Recent studies employing speech stimuli to investigate 'cocktail-party' listening have focused on entrainment of cortical activity to modulations at syllabic (5 Hz) and phonemic (20 Hz) rates.

Sensory representations and pupil-indexed listening effort provide complementary contributions to multi-talker speech intelligibility

open access: yesScientific Reports
Multi-talker speech intelligibility requires successful separation of the target speech from background speech. Successful speech segregation relies on bottom-up neural coding fidelity of sensory information and top-down effortful listening.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Frequency Responses of a Graphene Oxide Reinforced Concrete Structure

open access: yesRevista Eídos
This paper presents a comprehensive investigation on the vibrations of reinforced concrete structure by graphene oxide powders (GOPs) using a polynomial displacement field and the Generalized Differential Quadrature Method (GDQM).

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Retinal Ganglion Cell Responses to Low-frequency Focused Ultrasound Stimulation

open access: yes, 2017
PURPOSE: Acoustic retinal prosthesis has been put forward using high-frequency US with non-invasive and high-resolution advantages. But its application is limited by the difficulties in fabrication, energy consumption and acoustic attenuation.
