Tidal fluctuations and spatial heterogeneity lead to trapping and chaotic mixing in coastal aquifers [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
The combined effect of tidal forcing and aquifer heterogeneity leads to intricate transport patterns in coastal aquifers that impact both on solute residence times and mixing dynamics. We study these patterns through detailed numerical simulations of density-dependent flow and transport in a three-dimensional heterogeneous coastal aquifer under tidal ...

Assessing global crabbing scheme feasibility for Electron-Ion Collider [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) plans to utilize the local crabbing crossing scheme. This paper explores the feasibility of adopting a single crab cavity with adjusted voltage, inspired by the successful global crabbing scheme in KEKB, to restore effective head-on collisions.

Insight Into Trophic Niche Differentiation in Labeobarbus (Cyprinidae) in the Luhoho Basin (Upper Congo Basin)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
Six Labeobarbus species occur in the Middle Luhoho, a left‐bank affluent of the Lowa River, including two chiselmouth species (Labeobarbus brauni, L. longidorsalis) and three rubberlip species (L. caudovittatus, L. longifilis, L. paucisquamatus), as well as an intermediate phenotype referred to as the smiling phenotype.

Balancing Monitoring and Management in the Adaptive Management of an Invasive Species

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
Smart allocation of managers' limited resources is necessary to effectively control invasive species, but determining how to allocate effort between monitoring and management over space and time remains a challenge. We considered the question of optimal spatial allocation of resources to monitoring and management, while also considering the potential ...

Transcriptomics of the Anthopleura Sea Anemone Reveals Unique Adaptive Strategies to Shallow‐Water Hydrothermal Vent

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
The nonsymbiotic sea anemone Anthopleura nigrescens thrives in the extreme shallow‐water hydrothermal vents off Kueishan Island, Taiwan, where they represent some of the world's most extreme environments. Transcriptomic analyses revealed that genes involved in H2S homeostasis, stress resistance, and DNA repair are enriched in vent populations ...
