Wildfire Ash Alters Freshwater Crustacean Behavior: Disentangling the Contributions of Suspended Macroparticles and Ash‐Induced Alkalinization

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Climate change and anthropogenic ignitions are intensifying wildfire frequency worldwide, elevating the risk of freshwater contamination by ash. In water, dissolved ash releases ions and other toxic constituents that increase pH and alter physicochemical conditions, while suspended ash particles may impose mechanical stress, disrupt behavior ...

Water temperature shapes amino acid metabolism to modulate growth and development in crustacean larvae

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
Water temperature is a key environmental factor influencing the growth and development of crustaceans, yet the mechanisms underlying larval responses to temperature remain poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of temperature variation on

Hotter, faster, sicker? Warming shifts the cost of infection from individuals to populations

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examines how temperature alters disease impacts across biological scales in a host–pathogen system. We found infected hosts appear healthiest at warm temperatures, yet populations suffer most. This suggests climate warming may intensify disease impacts for populations in ways traditional individual‐level virulence metrics fail to predict ...

Tropomyosin allergen from freshwater and marine water crabs: Identification, structural-physicochemical, rheological and allergenic characterization

open access: yesApplied Food Research
The aim of the present investigation was to purify and characterize highly allergenic tropomyosin from economically important crab species of freshwater and marine sources.

Eyes on the water: How local mariners can accurately detect a submerged human proxy in shallow nearshore coastal water with modern recreational fish finders

open access: yesJournal of Forensic Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract It has recently been demonstrated that modern recreational fish finders with high‐frequency (800 kHz) Sidescan transducers can detect submerged human bodies. This ubiquitous technology is widely used on the water and has the potential to be utilized for the rapid detection of submerged decedents in any waterbody.

The Effects of Noise on the Juvenile Life Stage of Crustaceans: Behavioral, Cellular, and Molecular Responses in Procambarus clarkii

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Juvenile Procambarus clarkii exposed to noise exhibited behavioral changes, shifts in enzymatic activity, and altered expression of stress and immune genes. The findings highlight the sensitivity of invertebrate juveniles to anthropogenic acoustic pollution.

The mitochondrial genome of Huananpotamon koatenense (Rathbun, 1904) (Brachyura, Potamidae) and phylogenetic analysis

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources
Freshwater crabs play essential roles in the well-functioning of the inland aquatic ecosystems. However, due to the lack of sufficient molecular resources, the study of freshwater crabs has been greatly hindered.
