Fungal Decomposers in Freshwater Environments

2019
Streams, rivers, and freshwater marshes often depend on plant litter as a source of carbon, nutrients, and energy that drive ecosystem processes. Decomposition of this organic matter, such as leaves, wood, or emergent macrophytes, is mediated mostly by fungi, whereas the role of bacteria is minor.

Plasmid Transfer in a Freshwater Environment

1988
As the potential uses for genetically manipulated micro-organisms widen the demand for their exploitation will increase. This will inevitably result in their deliberate or accidental release, an occurrance which has led ecologists to predict environmental disaster [13]. Others believe that the chance of disaster is remote because of experience with non-

Bacteriology of the freshwater environment: Implications for clinical therapy

Annals of Emergency Medicine, 1987
Water and animal tissue samples were obtained from sources in Tennessee, California, and Florida. Purified bacterial colonies were isolated and organisms identified. Fifty-eight isolates were recovered. Twenty-seven Gram-negative isolates were identified. Gram-positive organisms were of the coryneform group or Bacillus species.

Freshwater Microcosms in Fluctuating Environments

Oikos, 1977
mical nutrients were added to the microcosms at a constant rate while the energy for photosynthesis was supplied at three different intensities and was modulated sinusoidally providing a component of the environment which fluctuated in a deterministic fashion.

Behaviour of Technetium in Freshwater Environments

1986
Currently the major sources of 99Tc released to the environment in the United States are gaseous diffusion plants that enrich reprocessed nuclear fuel. At present these facilities are located on freshwater streams into which liquid effluents are released.

ASSESSMENT OF THE SAFETY OF DIOCTYL ADIPATE IN FRESHWATER ENVIRONMENTS

Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 1986
Abstract A safety assessment of dioctyl adipate (DOA) in freshwater environments was conducted. DOA is relatively insoluble in water and is likely to partition to sediment and biota in the aquatic environment. Biodegradation was found to be rapid and extensive under conditions simulating sewage systems and the natural environment ...

Environment and Reproduction in Freshwater Triclads

Nature, 1961
REPRODUCTION in triclads varies from asexual to complicated sexual methods1,2 both within and between species. Attempts to determine the causes of such differences resulted in controversy between students favouring the external environment3 and those favouring an internal physiological process4,5 as the determinant.

Environments and Ecosystems: Freshwater and Marine

1984
Protozoa are found in a remarkable variety of environments. The range of habitats extends from the frozen soils of the polar regions to the hot spring run-offs from thermal areas, from the crystal-clear waters of oligotrophic alpine lakes to the richly polluted waters of sewage systems which operate on biological treatment. They are found in freshwater

PCP in the freshwater and marine environment of the European Union

Science of The Total Environment, 1999
This study collates monitoring data principally from 1991 to 1996, relating levels of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in the freshwater and marine environments of the European Union (EU) Member States of Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK.

Sources of chemical contaminants and routes into the freshwater environment

Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2000
Drinking water is derived from either surface waters or groundwater. The latter is of enormous importance, with more than 65% of Europe's drinking water needs being supplied in this way. However, water from either source is rarely, if ever, pure. Industrialization and urbanization together with intensified agricultural activity have led to increased ...
