Microplastics retention by reeds in freshwater environment

Science of The Total Environment, 2021
Microplastic pollution has recently gained increasing attention. The accumulation of microplastics in plants has been confirmed in the marine environment. However, the extent of the microplastic retention in freshwater plants is still unknown. In this study, sediment and plant samples from six reed farms in the wetland of East Dongting Lake were ...

Occurrence of caffeine in the freshwater environment: Implications for ecopharmacovigilance

Environmental Pollution, 2020
Owing to the substantial consumption of caffeinated food, beverages, and medicines worldwide, caffeine is considered the most representative pharmaceutically active compound (PhAC) pollutant based on its high abundance in the environment and its suitability as an indicator of the anthropogenic inputs of PhACs in water bodies.

Post-mortal lesions in freshwater environment

Forensic Science International, 2011
Postmortem animal feeding activity may cause considerable damage to bodies resulting in the modification of wounds, loss of identifying features and injury. Certain postmortem lesions may appear inflicted or non-inflicted antemortem injuries. At present, apart from cases in sea water, no data are available about post mortal lesions performed by aquatic

Dispersants in the Freshwater Environment

1989
During the past four years, a research program to investigate the effect of oil and dispersant chemicals on a freshwater ecosystem has been carried out. Laboratory experiments were used to select a suitable dispersant for a field trial and to develop monitoring techniques which would be capable of detecting chronic and sublethal effects in selected ...

Riboflavin-photosensitized degradation of atrazine in a freshwater environment

Chemosphere, 2002
The effect of the photosensitizer riboflavin (0, 10, 50, 100 microM) on the fate of atrazine (10 mg/l) in a freshwater environment was studied. It was found that at 100 microM riboflavin significantly enhanced the degradation of atrazine and more than 80% of atrazine in a natural water environment was depleted in 72 h.

Chitin dynamics in the freshwater environment

Biochemical Systematics and Ecology, 1991
The seasonal fluctuation of chitin dynamics in fresh water was studied in a mesotrophic bog and a hypereutrophic lake in Japan. The metabolic rates of chitin were higher in more eutrophic water. Thus, the chitin turnover rate during summer was one order of magnitude greater in the hypereutrophic lake than in the mesotrophic bog.

Cyanobacteria in Freshwater Benthic Environments

2012
Cyanobacteria are widespread in freshwater benthic environments, which include wetlands, lake littoral zones, streams and rivers. This chapter outlines the major constraints on cyanobacteria in these environments. Environmental and ecological factors that determine the diversity and biomass of cyanobacteria in the freshwater benthos include physical ...
