Cyanobacteria in Freshwater Benthic Environments

2012
Cyanobacteria are widespread in freshwater benthic environments, which include wetlands, lake littoral zones, streams and rivers. This chapter outlines the major constraints on cyanobacteria in these environments. Environmental and ecological factors that determine the diversity and biomass of cyanobacteria in the freshwater benthos include physical ...

Freshwater Microcosms in Fluctuating Environments

Oikos, 1977
mical nutrients were added to the microcosms at a constant rate while the energy for photosynthesis was supplied at three different intensities and was modulated sinusoidally providing a component of the environment which fluctuated in a deterministic fashion.

Fungal Decomposers in Freshwater Environments

2019
Streams, rivers, and freshwater marshes often depend on plant litter as a source of carbon, nutrients, and energy that drive ecosystem processes. Decomposition of this organic matter, such as leaves, wood, or emergent macrophytes, is mediated mostly by fungi, whereas the role of bacteria is minor.

Chitin dynamics in the freshwater environment

Biochemical Systematics and Ecology, 1991
The seasonal fluctuation of chitin dynamics in fresh water was studied in a mesotrophic bog and a hypereutrophic lake in Japan. The metabolic rates of chitin were higher in more eutrophic water. Thus, the chitin turnover rate during summer was one order of magnitude greater in the hypereutrophic lake than in the mesotrophic bog.

Microbiota comparison of Pacific white shrimp intestine and sediment at freshwater and marine cultured environment.

Science of the Total Environment, 2019
Environmental microbiota plays important roles in the intestinal microbiota of aquatic animals. The Pacific white shrimp with high commercial value and euryhaline property has become the most important commercial species of shrimp in the world.

Microplastics in freshwater systems: A review on occurrence, environmental effects, and methods for microplastics detection.

Water Research, 2017
The continuous increase in synthetic plastic production and poor management in plastic waste have led to a tremendous increase in the dumping into our aqueous environment.

Plasmid Transfer in a Freshwater Environment

1988
As the potential uses for genetically manipulated micro-organisms widen the demand for their exploitation will increase. This will inevitably result in their deliberate or accidental release, an occurrance which has led ecologists to predict environmental disaster [13]. Others believe that the chance of disaster is remote because of experience with non-

Behaviour of Technetium in Freshwater Environments

1986
Currently the major sources of 99Tc released to the environment in the United States are gaseous diffusion plants that enrich reprocessed nuclear fuel. At present these facilities are located on freshwater streams into which liquid effluents are released.
