The Freshwater Mussels of Tennessee

1998
With more than 150 species and subspecies recorded in the state, Tennessee has one of the most diverse freshwater mussel faunas in North America. Valuable as indicators of water quality, these mollusks have themselves become threatened as development encroaches on habitat—twenty-three are currently listed as endangered species and at least twelve have ...

A disease of the freshwater mussel, Margaritifera margaritifera

Journal of Invertebrate Pathology, 1968
Abstract Several freshwater mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera) were collected from a river in the state of Washington. They possessed large watery lesions on the foot, with a resilience similar to that of a sponge. Some animals possessed scarred wounds that were not pliable or resilient.

Knowledge and uses of freshwater mussels in Europe

Ambio
Most freshwater mussels (FM) in Europe have dramatically declined and are now facing extinction due to human disturbances. Given the recent EU initiatives to protect and restore freshwater ecosystems, public awareness should be considered in the implementation of possible management measures.

Aspects of iron metabolism in a freshwater mussel

Canadian Journal of Zoology, 1970
Estimations of the total iron content of tissues of Elliptio confirm that this animal concentrates iron. During starvation, tissue mass decreases more than total iron and an apparent increase in iron content results. Most iron is contained in the viscera and mantle, while muscular tissue contains least.59Fe injected into the visceral mass was rapidly ...

Freshwater Mussel Propagation for Restoration

2018
Freshwater mussels are declining rapidly worldwide. Propagation has the potential to restore numbers of these remarkable organisms, preventing extinction of rare species and maintaining the many benefits that they bring to aquatic ecosystems. Written by practitioners with firsthand experience of propagation programs, this practical book is a thorough ...

Chloride Transport in Freshwater Mussels

Physiological Zoology, 1979
Chloride transport in unionid bivalves is cation independent and is apparently an anion exchange system. The influx of Cl is highly correlated with the appearance of titratable base in the bathing medium. There is a substantial exchange diffusion component of Cl fluxes in these mussels.

Glochidial Mortality in Freshwater Mussels

2001
A crucial factor in the reproduction of parasites is the rate of successful host infection. In most parasitic species subtle mechanisms for the effective transmission of infectious stages have evolved. These include vector transmission, highly mobile propagules that are able to locate and infect new hosts actively, attraction of hosts, extremely ...

Global diversity of freshwater mussels (Mollusca, Bivalvia) in freshwater

Hydrobiologia, 2007
The term freshwater bivalve is very inclusive and not very informative. There are representatives of at least 19 families that have at least one representative living in freshwater. This suggests at least 14 different invasions of freshwater. At least nine families have small to large radiations in the freshwater environment: Corbiculidae, Sphaeriidae,
