Corrosion in Modular Revision Hip Stem Tapers - A Retrieval Analysis. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Orthop Res
ABSTRACT In revision hip arthroplasty, modular stems enable intraoperative adjustment of the biomechanics of the hip to ensure a stable joint function even in complex anatomical cases. Modular stem junctions, however, carry the risk of junction degradation due to corrosive processes or even junction breakage.

Predicting the steady state thickness of passive films in order to prevent degradations of implant [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Some implants have approximately a lifetime of 15 years. The femoral stem, for example, should be made of 316L/316LN stainless steel. Fretting corrosion, friction under small displacements, should occur during human gait, due to repeated loadings and un ...

Assessing the material loss of the modular taper interface in retrieved metal on metal hip replacements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Measuring the amount of material loss in the case of revised hip replacements is considered to be a prerequisite of understanding and assessing the true in vivo performance of the implant.

Knee arthroplasty failure is associated with significant systemic multimetal exposure

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose This study investigated whether patients scheduled for revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are systemically exposed to arthroplasty metals, and whether systemic metal levels in these patients differ depending on the implants' levels of constraint.

Orthopedic Implant Fretting Corrosion

open access: yesCorrosion Reviews, 2003
Fretting corrosion occurs to some extent on all load bearing metallic orthopedic implants. Fretting of total hip and knee replacements occurs at such places as the bone-stem interface, the stem-cement interface, and on the interfaces of modular connections between implant components.
