On the Use of Linear and Nonlinear Controls for Mechanical Systems Subjected to Friction-Induced Vibration

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
Friction-Induced Vibration and noisE (FIVE) is still a complex and nonlinear physical phenomenon which is characterized by the appearance of instabilities and self-sustained vibrations.

Thermo‐Fluorescent Bactericidal Quantum Dots Based Smart Multifunctional Textiles via Molecular Surface Engineering and 3D‐Printed Interlocked Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A versatile approach is presented for fabricating smart multifunctional textiles by integrating thermo‐fluorescent carbon dot/polymer nanocomposite coatings with 3D‐printed interlocked architectures. The fabrics exhibit temperature‐responsive fluorescence, durable hydrophobicity, strong antibacterial and antioxidant activity, and enhanced UV protection.

Analytical Determination of Stick–Slip Whirling Vibrations and Bifurcations in Rotating Machinery

open access: yesApplied Sciences
In rotating machinery, aerodynamic forces and oil film forces often lead to cross-coupling stiffness. This paper is aimed at studying the stick-slip whirling vibrations induced by the piecewise smooth rotor/stator frictions in a modified flexible rotor ...

Magnetometer deployment mechanism for Pioneer Venus [PDF]

open access: yes, 1977
A three segment, 15-foot boom mechanism was developed to deploy magnetometers from the Pioneer Venus orbiter spinning shelf. The stowage mechanism is designed to contain the magnetometers during launch and to deploy these instruments by centrifugal force

Rapid Fabrication of Self‐Propelled and Steerable Magnetic Microcatheters for Precision Medicine

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A rapid Joule heating fabrication method for the production of self‐propelling, adaptive microcatheters, with tunable stiffness and integrated microfluidic channels is presented. Demonstrated through three microrobotic designs, including a steerable guiding catheter, an untethered wave‐crawling TubeBot, and a distal‐end propelled microcatheter, it was ...

The description of friction of silicon MEMS with surface roughness: virtues and limitations of a stochastic Prandtl–Tomlinson model and the simulation of vibration-induced friction reduction

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Nanotechnology, 2010
We have replaced the periodic Prandtl–Tomlinson model with an atomic-scale friction model with a random roughness term describing the surface roughness of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) devices with sliding surfaces.
