Effect of Normal Contact Vibration on Nano-Scale Friction

open access: yesLubricants, 2019
In this work, we investigate the effect of contact vibration on the friction of sliding single asperity contacts of different adhesion strength over a wide range of load and vibration amplitude.

Viscous damping exciting friction-induced vibration in pin-on-disk systems

open access: yesResults in Engineering, 2021
When engineers add damping to a vibrating system, they typically expect that this will result in a more stable system. However, a few rather complex examples are known that show the opposite trend: situations in which damping generates friction-induced ...

Tactile perception by friction induced vibrations [PDF]

open access: yesTribology International, 2011
When a finger moves to scan the surface of an object (haptic sensing), the sliding contact generates vibrations that propagate in the finger skin activating the receptors (mechanoreceptors) located in the skin, allowing the brain to identify objects and perceive information about their properties.

Stability of friction-induced vibrations in water-lubricated bearings with interfacial mechanical effects

open access: yesFriction
In this work, a friction-induced vibration model for water-lubricated bearings (WLBs) is developed. The model incorporates interfacial mechanical effects, including the stiffness and damping coefficients of the water film, contact stiffness of asperities,

Acoustic Energy Transfer by Friction Induced Vibrations

open access: yesProcedia Engineering, 2017
Abstract Friction-induced vibrations are often investigated for their unwanted effects, such as surface wear and dynamic instabilities. This article focuses on the exploitation of friction-induced vibrations to transfer the energy between different acoustic fields by an interface under frictional contact.

Experimental study of friction-induced noise generated from the printer fuser assembly (Generation mechanism and countermeasures)

open access: yesMechanical Engineering Journal
In a printer fuser assembly, unpleasant noise caused by friction-induced vibrations can occur owing to friction between the pad and the inner surface of the fixing sleeve.

Stability Analysis of a Linear Friction-Induced Vibration Model and Its Prevention Using Active Force Control

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2014
This paper presents friction-induced vibration (FIV) caused by combined mode-coupling and negative damping effects in a simple FIV model. In doing so, a new four-degree-of-freedom linear model which consists of a slider and a block is proposed and then ...

Creep‐Induced Microstructural Evolution in an A2‐B2 Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A 27.3Ta‐27.3Mo‐27.3Ti‐8Cr‐10Al (at.%) refractory high‐entropy alloy with precipitation‐strengthened A2‐B2 microstructure was studied by creep tests at 1030°C, which demonstrate a transition in deformation mechanisms in the range of 100–150 MPa applied stress. This is associated with changes in dislocation–precipitate interactions. Relevant deformation

Model Reduction Technique for Analysing Friction-Induced Vibrations and Radiated Sound

open access: yesInternational Journal of Automotive Engineering, 2018
A novel approach for the calculation of friction induced vibration is presented and applied to a real life example. The balance equations of continuum mechanics representing the underlying physics are simplified and then solved numerically.

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.
