An energy description of wear mechanisms and its applications to oscillating sliding contacts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
To quantify wear rates, the Archard approach is classically applied. It relates the wear volume to the product of the sliding distance and the normal load.

Internal Friction and Microstructure of Ti and Ti-Mo Alloys Containing Oxygen

open access: yesArchives of Metallurgy and Materials, 2016
Ti-Mo alloys are promising materials for use as biomaterials, because these alloys have excellent corrosion resistance and a good combination of mechanical properties such as fatigue, low elastic modulus, hardness, and wear resistance.

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

Thermal diffusion dominates Cu enrichment in optically dark areas of Al-Cu-Mg alloys: mechanistic insights for fatigue resistance enhancement

open access: yesMaterials Research Express
Optically dark areas (ODAs) on fatigue fracture surfaces of Al-Cu-Mg alloys, linked to premature failure, exhibit Cu-rich nanoparticles and surface oxidation. The mechanism driving Cu enrichment in ODAs (between mechanical friction and thermal diffusion)

Evaluation of the Potential of Laser Shock Peening Compared with Cold Expansion for Improving Fatigue Resistance of Riveted Lap Joints of Aerospace Grade 7175 Al Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser shock peening for enhancing fatigue performance of riveted aerospace aluminum joints. A comparative approach with cold expansion combines fatigue testing and synchrotron X‐ray methods. Integrating mechanical testing with residual stress and strain characterization provides insights into how different treatments affect the ...

Study on Friction and Wear Properties and Mechanism at Different Temperatures of Friction Stir Lap Welding Joint of SiCp/ZL101 and ZL101

open access: yesMetals, 2022
In order to achieve the goal of lightening the braking system of urban rail trains, SiCp/ZL101 and ZL101 plates were welded by friction stir lap welding (FSLW) to prepare a new type of brake disc material. The friction and wear properties of the friction-

A practical methodology to select fretting palliatives: Application to shot peening, hard chromium and WC-Co coatings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Considered as a plague for numerous industrial assemblies, fretting, associated to slight oscillatory displacement, is encountered in all quasi-static contacts subjected to vibration.

3D‐Printed Serial Snap‐Through Architectures for Programmable Mechanical Response

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A serial snap‐through architecture is realized using compact 3D‐printed von Mises truss units arranged in a staged cascade. Their geometry and boundary conditions program multistage mechanical responses with plateaux and re‐hardening regimes. An inverted‐compliance model predicts these behaviors and enables analytical design of programmable force ...
