Static and Dry Friction due to Multiscale Surface Roughness

open access: yes, 2008
It is shown on the basis of scaling arguments that a disordered interface between two elastic solids will quite generally exhibit static and "dry friction" (i.e., kinetic friction which does not vanish as the sliding velocity approaches zero), because of

The Mechanical Impulse Method for Determining Dynamic Elastic Moduli and Internal Friction of Solids [PDF]

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Physics, 1964
The theory governing the excitation of a linear mechanical system by delta function impulse is summarized. In the case of a finite elastic rod excited by an impulse, the Fourier transform of the output function enables the frequency spectrum of the rod to be obtained.

Influence of Surface Finish on the Tribological Performance of AlTiBN Coatings Deposited on Forming Tools

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Aluminum and nitride coatings are used in industry because they are hard, resist wear, and protect against oxidation. Adding boron can improve friction behavior and other properties. This study tests coatings on surfaces with different finishes. Results show smoother surfaces perform better, while rough ones wear faster, although coatings can reduce ...

Three-Field Modelling of Nonlinear Nonsmooth Boundary Value Problems and Stability of Differential Mixed Variational Inequalities

open access: yesAbstract and Applied Analysis, 2013
The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly we consider nonlinear nonsmooth elliptic boundary value problems, and also related parabolic initial boundary value problems that model in a simplified way steady-state unilateral contact with Tresca friction

A Study on the Mechanical Properties of the Friction Welding with Solid Shaft of SM45C

open access: yesJournal of The Korean Society of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, 2012
AbstractIn the presented study, SM45C carbon steel parts were joined by friction welding. The welding process was carried out under optimized conditions using statistical approach. The study of SM45C is conducted with various combinations of process parameters.

Stretching the Printability Metric in Direct‐Ink Writing with Highly Extensible Yield‐Stress Fluids

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces “drawability” as a new metric for assessing printability in direct‐ink writing, focusing on gap‐spanning performance and speed robustness. By designing yield‐stress fluids with high extensibility, we demonstrate that extensional strain‐to‐break significantly enhances printability.

Md-Simulation of Fullerene Rotations in Molecular Crystal Fullerite

open access: yesCrystals, 2019
The present paper describes rotations of C60 fullerene molecules in the solid phase of a fullerite. The conducted studies show that these relatively large molecules rotate according to the same laws as macroscopic bodies, i.e., according to the laws of ...

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Predicting Atomic Charges in MOFs by Topological Charge Equilibration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An atomic charge prediction method is presented that is able to accurately reproduce ab‐initio‐derived reference charges for a large number of metal–organic frameworks. Based on a topological charge equilibration scheme, static charges that fulfill overall neutrality are quickly generated.
