Solid mechanics-based Eulerian model of friction stir welding
International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2014A new Eulerian model is established based on solid mechanics. With comparisons to the experimental data and the ALE model, the current model is validated. The power and the heat generations from pin side surface, pin tip surface, and shoulder contact surface in different rotating speeds are studied.

On the friction mechanism of solid lubricants
Journal of Friction and Wear, 2011It is shown that the coefficient of friction of polycrystalline graphite materials is governed by the crystallite size and adsorption heat of the molecules making up the lubricating layer. In the absence of a lubricating layer in the actual contact zones (in vacuum, dried gases, and in air at temperatures above 200°C), graphite loses its lubricity.

On the Magnitude of the Mechanical Component of Solid Friction
Journal of Applied Physics, 1949An experiment was performed in order to determine the magnitude of that portion of dry, kinetic friction which is contributed by Coulomb friction, or the mechanical interlocking of surface irregularities. The results indicate that the work of the mechanical component of friction accounts for only a few percent of the work of total measured friction.

Extreme Mechanics Letters, 2020Abstract A critical assessment of various solid-state-bonding mechanisms is established for friction stir welding (FSW) processes of engineering alloys. The commonly assumed sintering-like diffusional-bonding hypothesis is criticized in this work as not the dominant mechanism.

The friction and the mechanical properties of solid krypton
Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A. Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1955Abstract An experimental study has been made of the frictional behaviour and of the hardness of solid krypton. It is found that the friction is nearly independent of load over the range investigated. At temperatures close to the melting point the friction is very low and the frictional behaviour is similar to that of ice.
