Physics of martial arts: Incorporation of angular momentum to model body motion and strikes.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
We develop a physics-based kinematic model of martial arts movements incorporating rotation and angular momentum, extending prior analyses. Here, our approach is designed for a classroom environment; we begin with a warm-up exercise introducing counter ...

A Mixed Lubrication Model of Piston Rings on Cylinder Liner Contacts Considering Temperature-Dependent Shear Thinning and Elastic–Plastic Contact

open access: yesLubricants, 2023
This work develops a numerical methodology for predicting the performance of an automotive piston ring system by considering contact and lubrication mechanics.

Mixed Lubrication Modeling of Multi-Lip Reciprocating Seals Based on Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Theory

open access: yesMachines, 2022
Multi-lip reciprocating seals are extensively used in the subject of engineering equipment. However, the current research on the tribology of reciprocating seals mainly focused focuses on the numerical analysis of single-lip seals.

Asperity-based modification on theory of contact mechanics and rubber friction for self-affine fractal surfaces

open access: yesFriction, 2021
Modeling the real contact area plays a key role in every tribological process, such as friction, adhesion, and wear. Contact between two solids does not necessarily occur everywhere within the apparent contact area.

Slip and Friction Mechanisms at Polymer Semi-Dilute Solutions/Solid Interfaces [PDF]

open access: yesMacromolecules, 2021
The role of the polymer volume fraction, $ϕ$, on steady state slippage and interfacial friction is investigated for a semi-dilute polystyrene solutions in diethyl phthalate in contact with two solid surfaces. Signicant slippage is evidenced for all samples, with slip lengths b obeying a power law dependence.

Process mechanics in continuous friction stir extrusion process of aluminum alloy

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Mechanics, 2023
. Friction Stir Extrusion (FSE) is an innovative direct-recycling technology developed for metal machining chips. A rotating die is plunged into a cylindrical chamber containing the material to be recycled during the procedure.

Investigation of material flow and thermomechanical behavior during friction stir welding of an AZ31B alloy for threaded and unthreaded pin geometries using computational solid mechanics simulation

open access: yesProceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2020
In the friction stir welding process, the tool role in the material flow and its thermomechanical behavior is still not entirely understood. Several modeling approaches attempted to explain the material and tool relationship, but to this date ...

From the Fan-KKM principle to extended real-valued equilibria and to variational-hemivariational inequalities with application to nonmonotone contact problems

open access: yesFixed Point Theory and Algorithms for Sciences and Engineering, 2022
This paper starts off by the celebrated Knaster–Kuratowski–Mazurkiewicz principle in the formulation by Ky Fan. We provide a novel variant of this principle and build an existence theory for extended real-valued equilibrium problems with general, then ...

A Mesh-Free Solid-Mechanics Approach for Simulating the Friction Stir-Welding Process

open access: yes, 2016
In this chapter, we describe the development of a new approach to simulate the friction stir-welding (FSW) process using a solid-mechanics formulation of a mesh-free Lagrangian method called smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH).
