The Influence of Frictional Heating on the Sliding Friction of Elastomers and Polymers

Rubber Chemistry and Technology, 1988
Abstract The friction of polymers and elastomers has been widely researched, both in practical applications and in fundamental experiments. Although some of the basic mechanisms of elastomer friction have been well explored, the effect of frictional heating has not received much attention.

The influence of humidity on the sliding friction of brake friction material

Wear, 2013
Abstract Effects of humidity on the friction coefficients of brake friction materials at slow sliding speeds were studied. By measuring the static and dynamic coefficients of friction (COF) at high and low humidity levels, the mechanism of humidity-induced friction instability was investigated as functions of exposure time, applied pressure, and ...

The Influence of Vibration on Friction

SAE International Journal of Passenger Cars - Mechanical Systems, 2009
<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper summarizes results from the author's work on friction in dry sliding contacts in the presence of vibration. A number of idealized models of smooth and rough contacts are examined. It is shown that vibration can cause up to a 10% reduction in average friction even with continuous contact.

The Influence of Resting Periods on Friction in the Artificial Hip

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 2003
Insufficient tribologic performance of total joint components is a major cause of prostheses failure. Wear has been studied intensively using testing machines that apply continuous motions. Human locomotion, however, is not well represented by continuous motions alone.

The influence of air friction in speed skating

Journal of Biomechanics, 1982
With the use of a wind tunnel the air friction force Fw on six speed skaters of different body builds was measured. The dependence of the drag coefficient CD on air velocity v and the influence of different skating postures on drag were investigated.

Engine Friction: The Influence of Lubricant Rheology

Proceedings of the I MECH E Part J Journal of Engineering Tribology, 1997
The sensitivity of engine friction to lubricant viscometry has been determined for a modern fuelefficient engine, the Mercedes Benz M111 2.0 litre gasoline engine, under both cold starting and fully warmed-up conditions. The study has taken into account realistic lubricant viscometric parameters such as the lubricant viscosity variation with shear rate

IMPACT RESPONSE AND THE INFLUENCE OF FRICTION

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1998
Non-smooth stiffness and damping characteristics are commonly encountered in mechanical systems. The specific physical contacts considered in this paper are impact and friction. Although these individual effects have been the subject of quite intensive research it is their interaction and influence on the dynamic behavior of a mechanical oscillatory ...

Influences of alternative friction aggregates on texture and friction characteristics of high friction surface treatment

Construction and Building Materials, 2022
Abstract High friction surface treatment (HFST) is commonly used to improve surface friction of asphalt pavements at high crash rate locations, and the objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of using alternative friction aggregates in HFST.

Investigation of thermal influence on the frictional characteristics of friction materials

Journal of the Balkan Tribological Association, 2020
In modern automotive clutch systems, various friction materials are used, which are playing a crucial role in transfer of power in different types of engines and machines. In this study, a G95 woven frictional material was subjected to different working conditions over a time sequence in order to evaluate the generated frictional force and the ...

Influence of friction on piezoelectric sensors

Sensors and Actuators A: Physical, 2008
Abstract Piezoelectric sensors are usually made of a sensing element compressed between two plates. Therefore, the applied point/distributed load is transferred through these plates to the piezoelectric sensing element. In this sandwich configuration, surface friction has an inevitable and significant impact on the resultant output of the sensor ...
