Self-Organized Criticality with Complex Scaling Exponents in the Train Model
The train model which is a variant of the Burridge-Knopoff earthquake model is investigated for a velocity-strengthening friction law. It shows self-organized criticality with complex scaling exponents.

A new friction factor relationship for fully developed pipe flow [PDF]
The friction factor relationship for high-Reynolds-number fully developed turbulent pipe flow is investigated using two sets of data from the Princeton Superpipe in the range 31×10^3 ≤ ReD ≤ 35×10^6. The constants of Prandtl’s ‘universal’ friction factor

A multi-contact model to study the dynamic stick-slip and creep in mechanical frictional pair
The original Iwan-type model is always based on the quasi-static assumption, which neglects the dynamic properties of the frictional interface. In this paper, A Iwan-type multi-contact model is established to study dynamic stick-slip and creep in ...

Law of the wall in an unstably stratified turbulent channel flow
We perform direct numerical simulations of an unstably stratified turbulent channel flow to address the effects of buoyancy on the boundary layer dynamics and mean field quantities.

Gutenberg-Richter’s law in sliding friction of gels [PDF]
We report on experimental studies of spatio-temporally heterogeneous stick-slip motions in the sliding friction between a hard polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA, plexiglass) block and a soft poly-dimethyl siloxane (PDMS, silicone) gel plate.

This study investigates laser shock peening for enhancing fatigue performance of riveted aerospace aluminum joints. A comparative approach with cold expansion combines fatigue testing and synchrotron X‐ray methods. Integrating mechanical testing with residual stress and strain characterization provides insights into how different treatments affect the ...

Adaptive Terminal Sliding Mode Control of Picking Manipulator Based on Uncertainty Estimation
In this paper, a robust nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode control scheme for the picking manipulator under the condition of load change and nonlinear friction disturbance is presented.

Self-Similarity of Friction Laws
The change of the friction law from a mesoscopic level to a macroscopic level is studied in the spring-block models introduced by Burridge-Knopoff. We find that the Coulomb law is always scale invariant.

Adaptable Tile‐Based Pneumatic Origami through Structurally Coupled Localized Actuation
This article presents tile‐based pneumatic origami structures with rigid tiles and flexible fabric creases, achieving adaptable properties including morphing shape, selective multistability, and tunable stiffness. Independently pressurized folding bladders at each crease enable structurally coupled localized actuation of origami structures.

A Constitutive Friction Law for Sheet-Bulk Metal Forming
Friction has a significant effect on metal forming both in economic and technical terms. This is especially true for sheet-bulk metal forming, which is a combination of bulk metal forming and sheet metal forming.
