Four‐Point Bending Tests at High Temperatures on Commercial MgO‐C Refractory Bricks with and Without Recyclate Considering Different Carbon Contents

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Four‐point bending tests are conducted in an argon atmosphere on commercial MgO‐C brick grades with and without MgO‐C recyclate from room temperature up to 1300 °C. No detrimental effect of the MgO‐C recyclates on bending strength is found. Instead, a decisive influence of the total carbon content is observed, with lower total carbon contents ...

Influence of Friction Models on the Seismic Response of Box-Girder RC Bridges with Double Concave Friction Pendulum Bearings Under Varying Deck Aspect and Mass Ratios

open access: yesBuildings
Friction pendulum bearings are widely used seismic isolation devices for bridges, with their behavior governed by friction during excitation. Sliding velocity and contact pressure are among the factors that substantially affect the friction coefficient ...

Dry Friction in the Frenkel-Kontorova-Tomlinson Model: Dynamical Properties

open access: yes, 1997
Wearless friction is investigated in a simple mechanical model called Frenkel-Kontorova-Tomlinson model. We have introduced this model in [Phys. Rev. B, Vol. 53, 7539 (1996)] where the static friction has already been considered.

Influence of an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere on Diamond‐Single‐Grain Scratching of Ti–6Al–4V

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐grain scratching of Ti–6Al–4V is investigated under controlled, oxygen‐free, and ambient atmospheres using a novel experimental setup with in situ high‐speed imaging. The approach enables direct observation of chip formation and adhesion under suppressed oxidation.

Effect of Axial Vibration on Sliding Frictional Force between Shale and 45 Steel

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2018
Activating drill string vibration is an effective means to mitigate the excessive drag encountered during drilling complex-structure wells. However, the Coulomb model cannot describe the sliding friction behavior between drill string and borehole rock ...

Al–Cu Composite Casting of Laser‐Deoxidized Copper: Bonding, Interfacial Chemistry, and Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser‐based oxide removal of Cu inserts in oxygen‐free conditions and examines long‐term oxidation kinetics and surface chemistry under different atmospheres via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Al–Cu compound casting with differently oxidized surfaces is performed, and intermetallic phase formation, morphology, and thermal ...

Multiphysics models for friction stir welding simulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Purpose: The Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process comprises of several highly coupled (and non-linear) physical phenomena: large plastic deformation, material flow transportation, mechanical stirring of the tool, tool-workpiece surface interaction ...

Investigation of Oxygen‐Free Wetting Behavior of Aluminum on Copper via Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The wettability of aluminum droplets (Al) on different copper substrates (Cu), where liquid Al spreads on solid Cu surfaces to form a liquid–solid interface, is studied numerically and experimentally. The experimental and numerical results show good agreement in the fast‐spreading regime.

A general mechanical formulation of two-dimensional bristle friction models with a focus on the LuGre model and its dynamics

open access: yesForces in Mechanics
Friction is an important phenomenon in the modeling of mechanical systems. To represent the dynamic properties of friction, bristle models such as the LuGre model are used mostly in the one-dimensional case.
